Last weekend, all work crews were cancelled due to bad weather.

However, George Bain writes:

"Due to the weather, I stayed home to work on the new sign for Mt. Tremper Station. 3 hours were spent laying out, sawing, sanding, and applying the first coat of black paint. Many more hours of painting and lettering remain. The sign is a replica of the Mt. Pleasant sign which hung under the waiting area of the CMRR's station for many years. Rather than repaint the sign to reflect the name change, I opted to save the original for historic purposes and make a new one. "

Many thanks to George for our new sign!

In Kingston, Mark Glaser sent this report: "A general cleanup of the railroad's Cornell St. Yard including brush clearing on the east end was undertaken today. Additionally, crews applied asphalt sealant to approximately 45 bridge timbers and loaded 35 into the side dump. A work train was dispatched later in the day and delivered these to a staging area immediately east of C-9 on the south side. Today's crew included Earl Pardini, Steve Gollow, Gary Lowe, Dave Hilliard, Jim Burke and myself."

Sunday, January 29th

Peter Fluchere manned our booth at the Amherst Train Show. He was helped by George Bain, Robert Shuman, Thom Johnson and others.

Writes George Bain: "The Springfield show was a great success. Many people stopped at our table to learn about the CMRR. We displayed large photos showing the best of our railroad, along with ones showing the damage from Hurricane Irene and the many challenges ahead of us.

Our main goal was to give out brochures and to get people to our website. We also gave postcards and some laminated "baseball cards" of the 407 and the 401 that I made. We also had one of Otto Vondrak's maps on hand to explain our line. For people who would be traveling to visit our railroad, we also distributed a large amount of Ulster County travel magazines

We made many new friends, including organizations interested in arranging charters and groups that would like to help us.

Many CMRR volunteers stopped by the booth to visit throughout the weekend."

Ernie,

Will this be a double-ended siding or a single ended siding? Will there be another turnout installed?

Rob,

Single for now, though it could be made into a run-around if it is needed someday. The location is identical to the location for the east switch of the Mt. Pleasant run-around that was removed prior to 1932.

Hi Ernie,

Thanks for the reply - I wondered, too. I am also curious about the purpose of a single ended siding in that location.

Also, how are you coming repairing the flood damage in Phoenicia? Will it be reopened for traffic soon, or is there other track work to be done before that happens?

Thanks,
Phil

Phil,

The siding will be used to increase our storage capacity outside of the Phoenicia yard. It is in a dry area that never floods, and will be used for maintenance equipment mostly. We also plan to elevate the end of the siding so we can back a trailer onto the end of the siding and load maintenance equipment more easily for transport to Kingston. The siding will also allow us to get our work train out of the way of the scenic train at a point about half way between Phoenicia (MP 27.5) and Cold Brook (MP 22.1) during the operating season.

As to returning to Phoenicia, we are awaiting flood repair funding. We believe this will occur by the spring so we can start working our way back to Phoenicia before the season begins in May.
