On April 24, 2012, the National Park Service removed SEPTA 2732 from outdoor display at Glen Echo Park in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, DC.

The decision was made to remove this trolley after considerable deliberation and research on whether it was economically feasible to either restore this streetcar or alter it enough to use as an outdoor exhibit. Faced with such a major expense and the fact this streetcar is not one that historically traveled to or from Glen Echo Amusement Park, it was decided to remove the trolley.

Workers used two fork lifts to lift the trolley, trucks, and railroad ties in one seemingly effortless motion. Then the flat bed truck backed up and the fork lifts placed the trolley on top of the flat bed and secured it with chains.

Since the hill exit at the Irish Inn was too steep for the flat bed to exit they had to turn around in front of the Yellow Barn and exit via the upper lot. This took some time and a fork lift was needed to support the weight of flat bed and trolley but it eventually made it up the hill.

The debris under the trolley was swept up and absorbent put down to absorb the oil and grease underneath. The area will be power washed later today.

We asked the trolley removal workers today what would happen to the trolley, since we had originally been told that the car would be scrapped, recycled, or sold. According to the workers, the owner thinks the trolley is really cool and he plans to keep it in the company's yard, along with some other treasures he has found over the years!

NPS will always be open to donations of *original* items that were part of the park.

Couple of lessons learned (maybe):

Streetcars do not survive well as outdoor display pieces. Even PCC cars with steel roofs!

There a lot of PCC cars out there that are potentially for sale. My guess is around a hundred. PCC cars are not worth very much. Offering one at 10x its real market value will get no takers.

The details of where 2732 went are in the Flimsies link.

Anything worth preserving is worth indoor storage. Mom Nature hates to see iron exist in the artificial form called "steel" and does her best to convert it back to iron oxide as quickly as possible. Dead wood is likewise converted back to humus, the only question is how soon. Delay of both these processes is an expensive proposition with a finite life, but isn't that what this hobby is all about?
