On Saturday, we had many projects going on in Mt. Tremper.

George Peck worked with Art Vogel, Al Schoessow, Dave Heick, Ray Farrell, John Prestopino and Dick Wilhelm on finish items on the new switch at MP 24.75. They installed and connected the switchstand and drilled out most of the remaining bolt holes for the joint bars.

Al Johnson, Thom Johnson and Bill Kaba painted the floor on CMRR 701.

At Mt. Tremper Station, George Bain writes: "Karen Vogel began painting the remaining trimwork inside and out. She also weeded the flower beds along the station. We built a small ticket agent workstation out of found materials to hold the cash register and agents supplies. Ray Farrell helped me place the empty tubs and Christmas lights in the attic of the station.
We moved the remaining tubs of misc items to storage in Phoenicia. Peter Fluchere came by after lunch and sprayed the stain on the new picnic tables. Joe Logiudice stopped by to discuss the proper placement of the new 2-way radio antenna on the station."

In Kingston, Mark Glaser writes: "In Kingston today, the bridge crew installed 12 ties on the girder bridge section of C-9. a length of permanent running rail was hard spiked on the south side. Track now reaches nearly half-way to the girder section's middle pier. Saturday's work group included Earl Pardini, Walt Otto, and myself. John Patane worked the morning and Bob Blake the afternoon shift, keeping the crew at the optimal level of four all day."

Sunday, May 13th

George Peck and Al Schoessow worked on the 407 in the morning, and got it started and prepped for service. In the afternoon, George Peck returned to the Longyear switch and drilled out the bolt holes for the comp bars on the east end, as well as spiked some ties on that end.

All hands to Mt. Tremper! We have lots of work to do to get the line, coaches, and station open and ready for the public in 1 week. Unless you are part of the core 4-man C9 crew, all volunteers should report to Mt. Tremper Saturday to help with trackwork, painting coach 701, or general station cleanup:

Longyear Switch. On Saturday, George Peck will lead a crew to finish the switch at MP 24.75 starting at 9am at Andrew's Lane. He will be drilling the last bolt hole, completing spiking the guard rails, tamping, and laying out ties and rail for the siding. George can use as many extra hands as possible as opening day is only 1 week away.

Trackwork George plans to send a tamping crew out later in the day to fix some sags in the line.

Coach 701. Al Johnson will continue work on the 701 starting at 10am at Mt. Tremper. Plans are to complete painting the seat pedestals and repairing two windows. He could use an extra hand or two.

Mt. Tremper Station. George Bain will be mowing, weed-whacking and cleaning up the grounds at Mt. Tremper at 9am. He will bring tools and supplies for the odd jobs on his punch list.

C9 Bridge. In Kingston, Earl Pardini will lead a crew to continue work on bridge C9. They will meet at Cornell Street at 8am. Plans are to continue replacing timbers on the first girder bridge, now that the truss is finished. Earl only needs three others for this work - all others should go to Mt. Tremper.

Sunday, May 20th

West End. On Sunday, George Peck will lead a crew at 9am to finish the switch and siding at MP 24.75 if it is not completed Saturday. Afterwards he will be doing general trackwork between MP 23.3 and 25.8.

C9 Bridge. In Kingston, Earl Pardini will lead a crew to continue work on bridge C9. They will meet at Cornell Street at 8am. Plans are to continue replacing timbers on the girder bridges, now that the truss is finished.

The section was then shifted north using rail car centering stands giving all bridge and track elements a uniform alignment from east to west. Measurements for the final (west abutment) permanent pedestal were taken. The track on the east approach was kicked over to conform with the bridge centerline . Crews working on the new deck positioned plates and drilled as needed. Several trees on the north side which overhung the bridge were removed,it is now possible to see the east end of the coaches on Route 209 from the MP 5 milestone. Participating today were Earl Pardini, Bob Blake and myself-Al Schoessow joined us later in the afternoon."

Monday, June 11th

The Little Railroad that Could: Catskill Mountain Railroad

by Jay Blotcher

The crews of the Catskill Mountain Railroad (CMRR) have been working on the railroad all the live-long day. But not simply to pass the time away. CMRR is a group of volunteers dedicated to rebuilding the tracks of the Ulster & Delaware Railroad. It once ran elegant passenger trains between Ulster and Delaware counties, from Kingston to Oneonta.
