Could be serious, but I would say not excessively so; the axle that has been giving trouble is the last one with grease lubrication, and a change to oil for it was planned anyway.

Well, if the last set of bearings on block grease were going to act up, they couldn't have picked a better place. As I type this, 630 sits in NS's East End Shop with the #2 wheelset and driving boxes back in TVRM's shop in Chattanooga. All the parts on are on-hand to complete the conversion to oil lubrication and volunteers are lining up to assist in reassembling the locomotive next week in Roanoke.

No promises but perhaps she will be on the point for the next set of NS employee excursions out of Knoxville.

Remember the 844...

Thought I read in TRAINS Newswire that S&A Heritage Diesel will be
substituting for SOU #630 and that the steam engine would be out
of service for "several weeks".

610 has been out of service since December 2010. But she has seen service on NS in the past.

I got to pace the 630 a little between Spencer and Winston-Salem. To quote Gomer Pyle......."she's nice........REAL nice". I was car hosting the next day and the 630 was a HUGE thrill to the passengers in my car as we rounded those tight curves between Winston-Salem and Roanoke. I will never forget the "oooo's and ah's" the first time they blew that whistle for a crossing outside of Winston-Salem. And that was from passengers that were mostly in their 60's and 70's. She may be a small freight engine but she is certainly carving her own niche of enchantment.

Are you doing anything different with the grease grooves in the crown brass when you convert the cellars to oil?

I got a chance to ride the 630 at TVRM back in April. I talked quite extensively about their new grease/oiling system while looking at the thermometers mounted in the cab roof. You could see that the temp was a bit higher on the axle that hadn't been converted. He said they were intending to try and make it a bit longer on the current setup to allow them to work on the 4501. It shouldn't be too long.

I'd be curious to know what the temps ran out on the mainline. We had a monitoring system on 1522 and recorded them every 5 minutes and downloaded them at the end of the day.

Of course I cannot speak for TVRM, but what I've seen done in the past is the original "grease groves" have their sharp edges chamfer or beveled. This was done so that the sharp edge did not act as a squeegee and wipe the oil from the journal face.

@Frisco, how was 1522 set up? Oil or grease?

The grease grooves are covered since the there is a layer of babbitt cast over the crown brass. From talking with the guys on the road a couple weeks ago, I understand at about 90-95º the oil was running about 120-130 and the grease around 140. Though I don't know the exact details of what's happening now, I suspect the 15-20º change in ambient temperature (compared to previous weekends) was enough to put the #2 into the danger zone.

1522 was set up with grease. We had managed to get a bunch of the old Texaco Hi-Tex 8 and it did much better than any of the newer stuff.
Frankly, I would have been tickled to death at 140 degree crown brass. The temp has to be up a little for the grease to do it's job. Unfortunately I had seen some pretty hot temps on the 1522.
An old article on the SP converting their engines to oil mentioned that the operating range of the grease lubed engines ran from 200 to 350 degrees. Yikes!
What always bothered me would be a big variation on journal temps from axle to axle at times.
It would have really been nice to have found one of the Frisco's old roundhouse foremen and ask some questions that bothered me over the years. We may have been worried for years over something that was normal in regular service.
