I recognize this is not a dumping ground for old railfanning photos, but as those recently posted have received a great deal of interest and praise from interested viewers, here's a few I scanned today. The location is Waldwick, on the L&HR.

This is Reading 2102 in disguise representing a D&H locomotive. That D&H never saved any of their own, evidently came back to bite them.

These are great pictures. I've always been interested in the modifications done to #2102 to disguise her as "D&H 302", particularly whether a new smokebox door was fabricated somehow with the recessed headlight, or whether the original one was modified and then restored to its original appearance. A photo of "D&H 302" in one of Don Ball's books mentions that a bus tire or rim(!) was somehow incorporated in the process.

I'm guessing Ross won't mind this expose', forty years later, but early adaptations to disguise 2102 were not as successful as others. The photo evidence appears here:

Posting old excursion photos is fine by this moderator. The folks here have helped identify people and events associated with railway preservation. It's interesting that much of the preservation has been in preservation so long it's preservation history is longer than it's service history.

Yes, the N&W canteen used by #302 (and others) is at Steamtown.

The "kitbash" work on 2102 and 1278 was done at D&H Colonie Shops in March and April 1973. 2102 (as 302) made a shakedown run Colonie to Whitehall and return on Saturday April 8, with the RDG headlight in the usual spot; the "nose door" was not yet ready for installation--- that would take place the following week. 1278 was still in the shop, getting the smoke lifters fabricated and installed.

Mr. Glueck's posting makes her resemble Groucho Marks and perhaps ever so slightly a young Howard P.??

That was certainly a great trip from Albany to Montreal and IIRC it went quite smoothly all things considered.

As I recall the border folks were so fascinated by the steamers that they cleared the long sold out train in record time. Of course that was before 9/11 and all the various new law enforcement agencies that now are everywhere to keep us " safe" from the bad guys. I shudder to think what would happen in todays reality, with a 24 car long train with 1,100 foamers aboard headed for an overnight in Montreal just because they liked trains.

We'd be there forever!!!

Just a point of order....You have the location as "Waldwick" in the original post and it should be "Warwick, NY" which was the headquarters of the Lehigh and Hudson River Railroad.

Wasn't there horrible weather for the event that these two engines were modified for? I seem to recall someone who'd been there, telling me years ago how awful the weather was that weekend.
And if so, I'd then assume these shots were taken at some other time before she went back to being RDG 2102 again?

Is it just my quick glance impression, or were the RDG 2100's considerably more beefy than the real D&H 300's? How do the two compare in weights, etc?
