Not sure how my son found this, but a short compendium of streamlined Russian steam locomotive designs.

While I won't make any cases for their tastes, there are some interesting pacing shots contained. I don't think this has popped up here before. However, to stay on topic, have any of the streamlined designs been plinthed in the former Soviet Union?

Not everybody knows this, but the original NKP 2-8-4s, built by Alco around 1934, were originally supposed to be streamlined. There is a diagram of the proposed jacket design in John Rehor's "The Nickel Plate Story," published by Kalmbach back around 1964, just after the merger into the Norfolk & Western. Budgetary considerations caused the streamlining to be dropped.

Streamlining was quite a fad at the time; I've read that the Rutland streamlined a 2-8-0 with Stephenson valve gear for a fast freight that road ran called the Whippet. Maybe someone here has a photo of that engine; it would be interesting to see what the Rutland did.

Frisco thought about an Otto Kuhler shroud of one of the 4300 class 4-8-2s they built. Thankfully they didn't do it.
The sketch is in Joe Collias' Frisco Power book.

But didn't the Frisco have some streamlined 4-6-4's that they rebuilt from Pacific's?

I don't think Frisco even had 4-6-4s, but they did have streamlined 4-6-2s that were rebuilds of some rather elderly locomotives:

I'm not a fan of streamlined steam, with a couple of exceptions (N&W's J, SP's Daylights); I will say that the Frisco's design somehow looks very appropriate for a train named the Firefly, the machines somehow remind me of bugs!

Don't forget the NYO&W's Mountaineer 4-8-2 number 405, which was very similar to Rutland's Whippet. And the Lackawanna streamlined several Pacifics, Ten Wheelers and even a 4-4-0, which I believe was converted from a Camelback.

Frisco had 10 Hudsons built from heavy Pacifics built back in WWI days. They ended up in several configurations from skirted w/streamlined pilots/small pilots/different paint/lettering schemes to fully unstreamlined. They were rather large for Hudsons, rode on 74" drivers and were rated at 3600 HP.
They had three Pacifics fully streamlined as illustrated in a previous post, a couple of Pacifics with running board skirts. They had one 1500 class 4-8-2 that was skirted with a streamlined pilot and stainless band on the tender. Thankfully they only had one.
Three of their Northerns were delivered in blue and white with the "Meteor" logo splashed across the tender.
When the dizmals arrived, the blue and white gave way to red and silver passenger diesels and streamlined cars.

Wow! That color photo of SLSF Hudson #1066 has made my day! A tasteful streamlining/painting. This is sure one engine that I wish had been preserved. Got any other color photos of Frisco steam?
