In the world of electric railway preservation, surviving streetcar and interurban bodies are often called chicken coops, even though they may not be not be used for housing hens. Another common use was roadside diners, of which a few survive. A Toronto PCC that I spotted in 1977 had become the Red Rocket Record Shop (a line of business which has also become "endangered"). Today I read of a suggestion for retired motor buses: A group in San Francisco has advocated adapting old Muni (SF Muniicipal Railway) coaches into mobile shower and restroom facilities for The City's numerous "street people" (or, to use a term my daughter learned when she worked for a Northern California county, the residentially challenged).

To bring this back to the railway preservation field: After the earthquake and fire in 1906, many of the cable cars that had been replaced by electric streetcars were sold off to provide housing. There have been reports that some of these car bodies still exist, although they've been incorporated into larger structures and are just about impossible to see without an invitation from the occupant.

A book about Carville(a settlement built of old car bodies after the 1906 S.F. earthquake) was published a few years ago.

There is one known remaining Carville house:
