Hmmm, most interesting. However, it raises the question of whether this (flanged sheet stress erosion) has been previously researched by ASME and what their recommendations were/are.

One detail that strikes my (as a relative neophyte) is whether the flanged sheet presents a greater factor of safety in that the stress riser or forward sheet motion does not end at a weld joint. Stresses distributed into a flanged sheet are spread over a greater area. Yes, they do crack, but I suspect that the potential for catastrophic failure is less.

I am sure I will be proven wrong on both counts, but if square corners were so superior, nobody would bother flanging sheets anymore (except maybe for riveted construction).
