I looked up DLM on the internet and found dozens of answers, including the Dominica Liberation Movement, but nothing that related to steam locomotives. Is it something like Deutsch Lokomotiv Machinenfabrik?

Thanks for the quick response--looks like an interesting website.

Is anyone else visualizing the Big Boy coming from the east and meeting SP #4449 coming from the west somewhere? A replay of the Promontory photo anyone?

Yes, making my move in three weeks to Salt Lake City all the more exciting.

I already accused Mr. Rowland of that idea, in this Group.

If there is to be a replacement sent to the fairgrounds, that will be one trip to chase, but the most interesting will be the 4014 from Pomona to Cheyenne. I wonder if UP will send 844 out to pick up her big Brother?

Congrats to UP!

Museum members report that 4014 will be moved in October, after the LA County Fair (by rail, I assume) to Colton (UP's shops, I assume again) to have the bearings worked on, before it is moved to Cheyoming.

I'm trying to learn what they Museum gets in trade.

As long as somebody else is paying, I'm sure it will be a great show.

I just had an epiphany. This is UP's way of getting back at NS for upstaging their heritage units.

That clanging sound you all heard to the Northwest of you about 10 minutes ago was my jaw hitting the floor.
Cripes, I go to Portland for a military vehicle convention for a week and come back to hear this.
I'm stunned. Count me among the legions who said it'd never happen. But I always reminded myself that they said the same thing when iIwas a kid and UP started talking about 3985 being run, and later when NS said the same about 1218. Plenty of people in both cases scoffed at both ideas...

This is going to be a great thing to experience...a 4000 under steam again; I never would have imagined it. I think once everything is said and done and the 4014 leaves Cheyenne under steam we will all be surprised as to where she romes.

Since it's been a couple of weeks since the initial announcement, is there any more info on the details of the deal? One thing I'm curious about is whether the mysterious benefactor who is funding the project will have any influence on the UP's operation of the 4014.

I highly doubt it....I thought after the restoration that they are going to pull an excursion for the group in Pomona but beyond that I would think UP is going to be making the decisions....guess we'' have to see what happens. Heck at this point I am just interested in seeing how they go about getting her out of the fair grounds.

We should mention that the route followed by 3751 on several of its trips, the Metrolink San Bernardino Line, would be the way that UP 4014 would start its homeward journey, since it goes right by the LA County Fairgrounds, and its predecessor Pacific Electric line was how the Big Boy got here in the first place (and the PE track was probably 75 or 80# rail, compared to Metrolink's 115 or 119# steel. Lots can happen between now and when 4014 heads for Wyoming, but it sounds like the process has started.

Most likely, panel track would be used to move the 4014 across the parking lot to the Metrolink line mentioned above by Bob Davis. I can't find the post, but it was stated that the move will not happen until sometime after the conclusion of this year's LA County Fair.
