I'm curious to know what the "scrap value" of such a locomotive is. The ad mentions it, so I guess the metal merchants have made their offers.

Nice looking locomotive. I tried to get a feel for its history which comes back to Anaconda. Did this engine end up at Edaville at some point with some of the other Anaconda locomotives?

I have also been in contact with the seller. Iā€™d be happy to lend a hand with a move and have some steam friends in the area who may be able to help out as well.

Its too good to let be cut up.

Hi JR,

This was was not one of the BAP locos that was at Edaville. Two of them are currently at Boothbay Railway Village and the 3rd has been restored to service by a private owner in PA(?) You may be able to find the videos of this locomotive posted on YouTube.

Edaville also had a 42" gauge 0-4-0ST that could possibly be rebuilt as an outside frame 2' gauge loco, but I don't know for sure whether the engine is currently at Edaville or not.

I was just looking at the WW&F #10, also a Vulcan and also built originally as a 30ā€ gauge locomotive.

Just food for thought. If doable on one, should be doable on the other. Maybe.

Found this older posting on how the regauging was originally done. WW&F redid it 40 years later in a more professional manor.

Edaville Railroad regauged the engine in '59/'60. They put a new (bigger!) boiler on. They also basically cut down the cross pieces of the frame, with the exception of the cylinder casting.

The cylinders are still 30", so they welded a bar on the outside of the frame which the cylinders bolted in to, and put large keys up against the casting wall to wedge it in place. As you can probably guess, that didn't work very well and we found the holes in the frame that held the casting to be egg-shaped when we removed the casting. Additionally there was a crack in one of the walls of the casting. We solved the problem by welding a vertical extension from the end of each bar to the frame itself, then keyed the cylinder in that way. We then custom-made four bolts which are dry-fit into the (bored-out) holes. That sucker ain't movin' again.

As for the drive rods, Edaville's rods came out straight from the connection to the cylinder rod, made a 90-degree corner in toward the frame, then another 90-degree corner back toward the wheel, similar to this: _|- They got away with it because the cylinders are so small. What we've done is put in a longer (and beefier) connection to the wheel which allows us to have a straight drive rod.

I've seen a picture of the regauging process, which was done outdoors on a paved surface, using (I'm told) jacks to hold up the frame.

FYI, the locomotive appears to be sold. I do not have the specifics of who purchased it. (And it was not purchased by the WW&F, although several of us thought that would be lovely, too.)
