Does anyone actually have the New Georgia roster? It would be interesting to cross reference the sale list.

Tim, I don't have the complete New Georgia roster, and they purchased a bunch of cars after I left the Georgia Building Authority in late 1986. I once tried to put a roster together but finally gave up.

Maybe we should start a separate thread for the New Georgia Railroad equipment?

I think we should work on Nippert and/or New Georgia cars next. Nippert collected the equivilant of the IP (well maybe not quite that much) and had the same idea. These were two of the largest collections of cars, outside of Amtrak, Sou, AUT or VIA to go on the market in the 1980/90s.

Well, with a few requests over in the "Surviving SOU Lightweight Cars" thread, I thought I'd go ahead and start a thread concerning both the cars owned by Alfred K. Nippert through his Gator Rail Tours, and the cars owned over the years by the New Georgia Railroad which based its passenger operations out of the old Pullman shops in Atlanta.

There are three sections of cars listed below: cars owned by Nippert-Gator Rail, cars owned by both Nippert and New Georgia, and cars owned by New Georgia. I don't have too much info concerning either operation, so the following roster listing is only a sample. Anyone with further knowledge feel free to add to the rosters.

Cars Owned by Nippert-Gator Rail Tours:

UP 57 seat dome lounge observation (blunt end) #9005 constructed in 3/1955 by AC&F in Lot #4096 (assigned to the City of Portland). Sold to Auto Train Corporation in 6/1972 as AUT #904 (not applied?). Sold to Anbel Corporation in 1981, which defaulted on #904 and it was sold to Passenger Car Associates. Sold to Nippert in 1983. Reacquired by UP in 3/1988 and renumbered to UPP* #9005. Renovated in 1989 and named "Harriman" (2nd). Renamed to "Walter Dean" in 1990. Amtrak registration #800621.

*UPP is the reporting mark used by Union Pacific for their passenger car fleet.

UP 57 seat dome lounge observation (blunt end) #9007 constructed in 3/1955 by AC&F in Lot #4096 (assigned to the City of Portland). Sold to Auto Train Corporation in 6/1972 as AUT #906. Reconfigured to "Dome Night Club" in 1973 as #542. Sold to Nippert in 12/1981. Sold to White Auto Parts in Kissimee, FL, in 1982. Sold to Northern Rail Car in 1987. Reconfigured as dome diner lounge observation (open platform) for Wisconsin & Southern as WSOR #9007 "Northern View". Amtrak registration #800148. Sold to Auto Train Corporation in 6/1972 as AUT #909 (not applied). Sold to Anbel Corporation in 1981, which defaulted on #909 and it was sold to Passenger Car Associates. Sold to Nippert in 1983. During this entire time, the car was not moveable (trucks removed?) from its storage location in the Sanford yard, and it was later barged out with other cars into the Gulf of Mexico and sunk to create an artificial reef. Anyone know the ID's of the other cars? And did anyone have time to remove usable parts from #909?

Bob sold the car to Eric Hopp in 2001. Eric had the car moved (as ERIX #1146) to the Minnesota Transportation Museum at the Jackson Street Roundhouse in St. Paul. Car has had metal replacement work (salt air!) and electrical rewiring (some of the components had been intended for SP business car #100 "Airslie") done over the last several years. 1. What was the method used for New Georgia's numbering system?

2. Were any of the cars owned by New Georgia used on the SOU-NS steam excursions?

3. Were the three ex-Wabash domes (owned by Don Williams) considered part of the New Georgia roster? Are they still in Duluth?

4. Were there any other private cars that were kept at the Pullman shops?

Additions and corrections are welcome. Thanks in advance.

According to my notes, New Georgia briefly owned a pair of ex-DL&W MU coaches:

New Georgia #1201 - built Pullman 1930 as motorized MU coach DL&W #2602, to EL #3602 in 1961, to CR #3602 in 1976, to Hartwell Railway 1984, to New Georgia #1201 in 1985, to Central Western Railway (#934?) in 1987, to Alberta Prairie Railway Excursions in 1990

New Georgia #1202 - built Pullman 1930 as motorized MU coach DL&W #2627, to EL #3627 in 1961, to CR #3627 in 1976, to Hartwell Railway 1984, to New Georgia #1202 in 1985, to Central Western Railway (#978?) in 1987, to Alberta Prairie Railway Excursions in 1990

Most of this information is from an old Canadian Trackside Guide and I'm not positive on the cars' CWR or DLW numbers; more information or corrections would be much appreciated.

*Edited to correct name of APRE

Two of the three domes have been sold. The dome-obs is still at the museum and is on display. Don owns additional equipment which is also stored at SRM, not sure how much of it was stored at Pullman.

A couple of minor corrections: Southern 3780 (NGRR 1104), CofG 651 (NGRR 1111), and ACL 307 were owned by the Atlanta Chapter and leased to the New Georgia. They were returned to the museum when the NGRR folded, along with the steam engines and the E8.

Atlanta Chapter's ex-BN commissary, 206, was also used primarily on the NGRR trains. It was painted Tuscan and used on NS trips for a year or so after the demise of the New Georgia.

Correct or not, the New Georgia recorded the original numbers on the DL&W cars purchased with the other Hartwell Railroad equipment as follows:

NGRR 1201, DL&W 4602
NGRR 1202, DL&W 4627

These DL&W numbers were also published in the Feb. 1989 issue of Trains magazine, which also reports they were sold in 1987.

These cars came from the Hartwell with the pantographs on top and traction motors, but the NGRR removed them soon after they started being used.

Quote:
MKT coach #884 to New Georgia RR at unknown date as NGRX #1101. Sold to Kentucky Railway Museum at unknown date (auction?) as KRM #884.

This car (and coach 1102, ex-MKT 904) came from the Hartwell Railroad, was originally MKT 911, to Northwestern Oklahoma Railroad to Hartwell Railroad to New Georgia Railroad in 1985. It was sold during the New Georgia Railroad equipment auction on Thursday, August 24, 1995. As reported in the "Surviving Southern LW Cars" thread, the 1102 (along with William Griffin, Jr. and Rappahannock River) was on jack stands at the time of the auction and the 1102 trucks went to Great Smoky Mountains while the body went to a private owner, along with the Rappahannock River body, to a farm in southeast Georgia.

I have gone back to TVRM's records and found when we got our four cars from Nippert in 1989. That year would probably be the same for the cars that went to New Georgia and NCTM. Our Hollywood Beach was traded to KRS.

Some updates for both the Nippert List and the Southern list.
Holston River and Shenandoah River where apparently owned by Nippert from 1982-1987 when they went to Old Kenner. They came to TVRM straight from South Philadelphia in 1987 so it looks like they were stored there for five years so that explains their condition. Old Kenner traded the two cars for a Baldwin VO1000 which never left Chattanooga. TVRM bought it back sometime later.

Somewhere I ahve the inspection report that was made when we went and looked at the Nippert cars in McComb and New Orleans. IIRC correctly we took notes on everyhting, even the cars we were not getting.

I think a couple of cars when to IRM at French Link, I'll see if I can figure out which ones.

Here is the transcription of the New Georgia Sales list. I did not list the prices but everything else is just like it was hand written on the list. After this many years I'm not sure where the list came from.

Thanks to Frank Hicks, Andrew Durden, John Winkler, Steve Syfrett, and Tim Andrews for the responses!

Does anyone have further information on the histories/origins of the New Georgia cars? Many of them I've been able to figure out, but some remain a mystery:

#1103. Ex-NOKL, nee-T&P. Did it also come to NGRR via Hartwell? Does anyone know the T&P/MP number(s)?

#1502. Ex-AT&SF Budd coach. Anyone know the number? Sold to Great Miami RR as FLSX #1502.

#1503. No information.

#1504. No information.

#1505. No information.

#1506. No information.

#1509. From what I found, the first #1509 was renumbered to #1964 and was sold to WMSR. So what's the history of the second #1509?

AT&SF #2937. P-S 44 seat coach, 1950. Also to Great Miami RR. Does anyone know what number it carried on the NGRR?

#6902. No information.

From what I found, the car listed as #100 to WMSR was formerly the #1508.

I found information on the Budd twin diner:

PRR #4624-#4625 built in 1952 by Budd in Lots #9666-110 & #9643-110 (assigned to the Congressionals). To PC #4624-#4625. To New Georgia RR at unknown date as #1511-#1512 (which one was which?). Sold to Florida Central at 8/1995 auction as FCEN #301-#300. Sold to Aberdeen, Carolina & Western in 2002 as ACWR #301-#300.

Were there additional cars owned by New Georgia that were sold before the auction?

Also, does anyone have a complete list of what Nippert acquired over the years?

Additions and corrections are welcome. Thanks in advance.

I just found a GATOR Route equipment list dated 2/1/83 that Al Nippert left for someone at TVRM. I'm going to cross reference it to the inspection report that TVRM's Jim Miller did in 1989 and a couple of other references that I have as well and see if that doesn't create a pretty complete list. I will say this, Al Nippert should be prominently listed on the Southern Lightweight listing as it looks like he was owner of more River series cars then have been previously mentioned. This is going to take awhile so I don't know if it will get done tonight or not.

Of course, when I think of the NGRR, the first thing that always comes to mind is the short-lived but funky "extra headlight" they applied to the ex-Southern E unit, as pictured here:
http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=166122&nseq=7

The 1101/884 at KRM was and remains a very nice car. NG had redone the interior, an Onan generator powered the HVAC and lighting. One of the restroom lounges had been converted to a refreshment stand, with a serving window cut into the wall. It wore New Georgia paint at KRM for about 8 years, complete with Georgia Building Authority heralds, until it was renumbered back to 884 and received a MKT-esque repaint. The car wasn't and I do not think it is still lettered for anything.

From the "Why do I still remember this?" department, the 1102 was even pictured in the auction brochure as being on jack stands in the shop. What kind of work was being done to it? If it was anything like the 1101, it is a shame it ended up on a farm somewhere.

David, the 1102 was actually shown on shop trucks, and looking more carefully at my photo taken the day of the auction, it was definitely on shop trucks, not jack stands. Unfortunately, the result was the same for the car. Literally put out to pasture.

I never found out what was being done to 1102 just prior to the auction, but the interior modifications to 1101 had also been done to 1102 within the first year of NGRR operations, so my guess is it was truck rebuilds or something similar. Pretty sure the 1102 also had a genset mounted. The auction company's decision to sell the 1102 body separate from the trucks was the death of the car. In one sense, it was a practical decision to sell the cars that were off their trucks the way they did: there was no more money to be able to pay anyone to put them back together, and they wanted everything off the Pullman Shops property very quickly. But considering they got $18,500 for the intact 1101, it might have been worth a few thousand dollars to reassemble 1102, which sold in pieces brought only $6000 from the various notes I have and have been told.

Actually, the reason I went through the effort to find and contact the owner of 1102 and Rappahannock River back in 2002 was to try and get the 1102...didn't really care about getting R.River. Considering both cars have been "down on the farm" for close to 20 years now, there's no telling what kind of shape they are in.
