 Post subject: PRR N6b 981741 restoration complete

Our N6b is done. Terre Haute Mayor Duke Bennett assisted us with a ribbon cutting ceremony today.

Side view is before I installed marker brackets.

We kept what I call cosmetic items like closet doors, but everything else was replaced or rebuilt including the end doors.

The Pennsy lives! Congrats on the completion of your terrific restoration. May PRR N6b #981741 have a long on useful life there at Terre Haute, reminding folks of the past and teaching the younger generation of the way things once were.

Thanks for all the kudos. I will pass them along.

It's been a long 5 year project.

Here's a couple more views via my cell camera. Not the best quality.

There are also some restoration pics on our facebook page. Search wabash valley railroaders museum.

Also, if anybody needs some of the marker holders/brackets we have a source who made some replicas to replace what was stolen from our car. The only thing missing is the casting numbers. We may be able to get additional brackets made.

Just out of curiosity, what is the roof covering? It looks odd, with no tack molding, but hey, what do i know about the Pennsy?

Asphalt roll roofing with a standard aluminum drip edge. We looked at rubber and a few other techniques and decided to go this route because the roof surface is not smooth. The catch is there are no nails. The achille's heel of these cars has always been the sloped cupola and roof around it. So, we've used some modern techniques to keep the water out.

Also, the blocks holding the cupola brackets are to help keep from crushing the drip edge and siding when tightening the bolts.

Thanks. My sense of aesthetics needs letterboards, or at least a tack molding. I had to search the web for some in service photos, and I will admit, it does capture the look.

How many of the PRR four wheel bobbers are left- er cabin cars? When I worked in Altoona during 1989, it seemed that there were only 2 or 3 left at that time. Wooden cars don't help up well at all outdoors.

476199, class ND, at IRM Union Ill.
476582, later Ma & Pa 2006, then Strasburg, on display outside the New Oxford, Pa. WM station

Unknown # former NDa at Red Caboose Motel, last painted as SP
There is reportedly another one privately held in the hands of an individual in the Northumberland, Pa. area; however, the last couple times I've been to him he hasn't mentioned it, nor was it in any of his buildings or on his property, and I *think* it's stored in a well-secured location with rail access elsewhere. Someone determined enough could find something about this elsewhere online, but I'm respecting his privacy.
I have been led to believe that there is at least one more out there, in some unknown/"fantasy" number...... there are reports of a four-wheeler near Deer Park, Md. where the archivists haven't even figured out if it's ex-PRR or ex-WM......

This was the one at the Carroll Park and Western RR in the 1960s and 1970s. Went to the Red Caboose Motel in 1979. Arrived at the CP&W around 1958. I'm still looking for info on it prior to 1958 but haven't had much luck.
