Continuing on a theme...

I'm trying to track down the histories/whereabouts/final dispositions of SP's business car roster, including subsidiaries. Any additional info or corrections would be most welcome.

At this point, I'm not including business/service cars rebuilt from SP's lightweight revenue passenger car roster. The only lightweight included is SP #150 "Sunset".

The list also includes instruction, medical, and dynamometer cars.

For multiples, if the order number appears in parentheses after the car number, then there are multiple cars with the same number. Example:

SP #132 (1st) "Cloudcroft"

For multiples, if the order number appears in parentheses after the car name, then there are multiple cars with the same name. Example:

SP #110 "Los Angeles" (1st)

In some cases, there are multiples for both car numbers and names. Example:

SSW #1 (1st) "Dixie" (3rd)

Total of 53 Cars:

The book "Mansions on Rails" by Lucius Beebe has a photo of SP business car "Emalita" which the book says was originally built by Pullman in 1893 as the "Alexander" for the then President of the Reading Railroad, Archibald McLeod. It was apparently McLeod's personal property as he retained the car after leaving the Reading that same year, then it ended up on the SP a few years later. We have often wondered what later happened to this car.

The Boone & Scenic Valley's #85 "City of San Francisco" was constructed in 1950 by P-S in Lot #6874 to Plan #4140C as SP 10RM-6DB sleeper #9044. Of the 29 total 10-6 sleepers in Lot #6874, six (#9040-#9045) were assigned to the UP-SP-C&NW joint-operated City of San Francisco, and painted in UP Armour Yellow, Signal Red & Harbor Mist Gray. Five of these (#9040-#9044) were rebuilt with blunt ends (marker lights, wrap-around paint, etc.) for end-of-train use in 1953 to Plan #4140D. #9044 was retired and sold at an unknown date to Henry Ketcher in North Little Rock. It was later resold at an unknown date to the Boone & Scenic Valley. The addition of the rear open platform occurred sometime in the 1980's.

There is an upcoming book on the business cars of the Southern Pacific that is being worked on. The people working on it have been part of the group doing the series on SP passenger cars. I am not sure if it is part of the series or outside of the series.

"T&NO business car #987 "Victoria" (1st) constructed in 1916 by Pullman as GH&SA coach #823 in Class 60-C-8 (seats?). Rebuilt in 1927 to T&NO business car #987 "Victoria" (1st). No disposition information whatsoever. Does anyone know the Lot and Plan numbers, and the accommodation configuration/capacity?"

"NWP business car #6 "Redwood" (1st) constructed in 1932 (by which company?). Retired and donated at unknown date to Santa Rosa depot. Does anyone know the accommodation configuration/capacity?"

'Victoria' came to the Northwestern Pacific on 8/10/1941 as Business Car #06 'Redwood'. It was renumbered MW 211 on 11/20/1958. The car was moved in 2011 to Samoa, CA, near Eureka at the northern end of the NWP, and now belongs to Timber Heritage Association.

NWP Business Car 104 was previously Central Pacific 108, built by Harlan & Hollingsworth in 1887. Purchased by NWP 5/17/1928; sold to SPdeM 9/8/1944. The car had wood siding when purchased by the NWP. A photo in our Archive collection shows the car in Mexico with steel siding. 'Southern Pacific' is on the letterboard, and 'NWP 05' and 'Culiacan' are centered on the car side below the windows. Culiacan is the capital of Sinaloa state, in Mexico.

A correction to my previous post, and some additional information.

NWP Business Car 05 (not 104) was previously Central Pacific 108.

The NWP had two narrow gauge purpose-built business cars:
01 'Club Car'

02 'Millwood'

It also had seven standard gauge business cars:

03 'Donahue' (built for Peter Donahue, owner of the San Francisco & North Pacific Railroad, predecessor of the NWP)

04 'Sequoia' (converted from NWP coach 68)

05 (formerly CP 108)

06 (probably the 'Montesano', an open-air inspection car converted from a stock car)

06 (second) 'Redwood'

09 (NWP coach 16 converted to an air brake instruction car)

1 - 'Redwood' (second)

Hello:

The SP141 "Oakland" is from P-S Lot 6103, Private car floor plan 7137.

According to the drawing that I have it indicates that the floor plan for the car is a modified version of plan #7081.

Hope this helps.

Thanks to Rick, Alex, MRLX1020, Lee, Hudson, Brian, Mike, David, and Jim for the responses!

Over on the "Heavyweight Observation Car" thread, Jerry LaBoda posted information regarding SP #110 "Los Angeles" and #112 "Instruction":

Additions and corrections are welcome. Thanks in advance.
