We have a car that we are painting. It is a hopper that was built in 1908 by the Pressed Steel Car Co. of Pittsburgh. I am trying to figure out the lettering under the 'ADA' and the 'ERN.'

It appears that under the 'ADA' the first line is WESTINGHOUSE; second line AIRBRAKE. I’m guessing this was some sort of advertising/marketing promotion by Westinghouse. I have no idea what lines 3-5 say.

Under the 'ERN', I have no idea, I’m wondering if its Capacity. Any insights provided will be deeply appreciated.

Thanks,

Mark

Mark -

Neat car! I wish I could help you with the lettering. This is just another one of those things that makes railroad preservation so much fun, and so damn frustrating!

Good luck with your search.

Based on this photo of a similar hopper car also built by Pressed Steel Car Company, I would think that the words under the "ERN" are the capacity on the first line, and "P S C Company" on the second line.

I suspect the "air brake" lettering told trainmen and car knockers that the car was air-brake equipped, in a time when some cars still were not. The fifth line probably says something like "K2 triple valve" or P-something, depending on what the car was originally equipped with. The 3rd and 4th lines probably had something similar to do with the specifications of the brake gear.

Does anyone have a builders photo that might show the lettering?

Thanks,

Like this?

W A brake
K-1 triple
5"x 5" shank
Miner gear
Metal brake beam

Those are all the cars components, they are noted so they can be replaced if damage is found during some incoming yard inspected, prior to being switched around.
