Ran across this video of an M-K-T steam whistle being used on a steam excursion. A different sounding whistle indeed!

On another board, a person with musical background described the M-K-T three-chime whistle as follows: "Two long chambers and one extremely short chamber. The two long chambers have a sweet major third combined with a concert 7th blown by the tiny chamber."

Has anyone run across a photo of one of these Katy whistles online? Would be interesting to see one.

I'll second that.

It is a distinctive sound.

I'll accept any whistle on a working steam loco.

The whistle was mounted on SP 786 for a weekend of trips. I was the fireman on the Sunday trip, and fanned the Saturday run. Once I heard the whistle, I had a STRONG urge to lay off that Sunday. The whistle is owned by Bruce Blaylock, and he was the engineer on both days. Later on, we found the whistle had a cracked chamber and I don't think it has been blown since.
