Hi guys,

I'm looking for a photo of a sofa in a HWT drawing room. In particular, I need a view showing the end of a sofa that illustrates the end piece facing the entry to the room. It would be what you see when entering the room. Any dimensions would be a plus. This is for a friend who is restoring 6-3 sleeper built in 1924.

Thanks for any response.

Try the Gene Hawk Photo Collection at the GN-NP Archives. lots of interior photos. It will take some digging as "Drawing Room" is not a standard search.

IRM's Pullman Library may have drawing(s) of the sofa seat.

Thanks for the plug, Brian.
For additional information, it would be useful to know if a sofa for that particular car is being sought, or whether it is a sofa already in hand. Over the past year, we have acquired glass plate negatives of passenger car interior photos from the later wood car era (circa 1900 to the early 20's), plus the very large collection from the late 20's on of safety negatives already in house. In addition to the large number of drawings for Pullman-designed sofas, these may be useful for cars that are currently being restored to original configuration. We have had several instances of that already. Please keep in mind that the Pullman Library is self supporting within the Illinois Railway Museum by the supplying of copied materials, under license for personal use, and that inquiries should be directed with a particular goal in mind to expedite our volunteer time. The reference that Brian gives will direct the requester to the email and to the Wednesday phone. This week there is a possibility we may have to reschedule our time. I would recommend the email first for an inquiry to be set up on the computer. Please include mailing address and a contact phone number in addition to email address and the request including the specific purpose for use.
Thank you all for your ongoing preservation activities, Ted Anderson, volunteer curator

Thanks Ted and Brian. I have sent your comments and link to the car owner. He may contact you directly rather than me getting into the middle of it. The car is the 6-3 named "Grey".

Pullman 6C-3DR sleeper "Gray" was built in 1924 in Lot #4804 to Plan #3523. It was one of ten such sleepers in that Lot. The "Gray" was sold by P-S to Royal American Shows in 1950.

I have not been able to locate the number assigned by RAS to the "Gray", but as a side note, another 6-3 purchased by RAS, the "Glen Alta" (Lot #4922, Plan #3523A, 1925, 1 of 40) is now in the collection of the Illinois Railway Museum. IRM also owns a second car from Lot #4922, the "Glen Springs". The "Glen Alta" had been sold to Jack Ferris in 1965 (I don't know when RAS acquired the "Glen Alta", just that it was #81). The "Glen Springs" was sold to William W. Kratville (head of the Autoliner Corporation) in 1964.

Jim--

There are a few interior views of both the "Glen"-Series cars now at IRM (in the IRM's galleries), including photos of the sofas, though I don't know if said photos will show the features your friend is looking for.
