I've been asked for historical information on Conrail caboose number 21216. It was retired in Roanoke by NS last year and donated to a local youth camp. Photos show "N-21" under the number. Class, heritage, and build date are requested. Any leads are appreciated.

Thanks

It's seems the CR N-21 Caboose was documented. Guess these were considered the only "True Built" for Conrail Cabooses. All the others classes were leftovers from other CR predecessors. Any of these groups might be able to provide you with more info than I could.

The N-21 Cabooses were built by Fruit Growers Express for Conrail in 1979. CR21230 is in Elkhart at the NNYCRM it was the only N-21A as it was built on FGE coil spring trucks the only one like that, the rest had leaf springs. The N-21s were the only cabooses built new for Conrail.

Digging up an old thread vs starting another..

Does anybody have interior photos or drawings of a N21 they might share?

Thanks

I'm pretty sure we can help.

Send the CRHS an email via the contact form: https://www.thecrhs.org/contact/

We have some N-21 stuff in the collection that I think will be useful.

I requested the info from CRHS. Thanks.

Now if I can just get this site to allow me to upload pics to help ask my question.

It will only work if you post your photos to an image hosting site like photobucket, for some reason. I think those sites resize them somehow so that they will work here.

Well, let's try it this way. Had to super reduce the size of the file.

I am guessing there was maybe a bunk in the large open space to the left.

I couldn't locate an N21 diagram, but I did find on for class N7B.

These cars were built a good deal earlier, in 1963 at the Despatch Shops. However, their overall external appearance is quite similar, and the dimensions are also pretty close. This seems to have been a New York Central design.

What's visible in the photo in the previous link looks very much like part of what's visible in the diagram. This doesn't guarantee the diagram can be used, but it may be a start.
