As a matter of policy, we prefer to discuss this project authoritatively through our website (http://www.newenglandsteam.org). That being said, many of you have been instrumental by either writing or contributing cash, to press our restoration efforts forward. With that being said, you all deserve to know where we are at.

We are raising funds through Facebook, Indiegogo, our website, and with mailed in contribution. Your response has been remarkable, and has breathed life into the project.
We are receiving attention from parts supplier as well, and companies that have been alerted by railfan employees. Several railfans have donated significant pieces of hardware from their personal collections, either to replace missing pieces of 470, or to be auctioned to support the rebuild. We are selling our logo shirts ($20 + $5.95 shipping) which have proved to be a winner.

Those of you who are active in steam restoration know the enormous funding requirements ahead of us. If you want to make your own donation or involve your business, please don't hesitate. This is an uphill climb, but New England Steam is making good progress. THANK YOU! Without this community, and everyone else who advocates for railroad preservation, this would not be possible.

We are well into Phase 1 - A fence has been erected around the locomotive. We are seeking an affordable, and possibly donated, removal of a "small" amount of asbestos around the steam chest, cylinders, and booster. Money for the actual purchase of the locomotive continues to come in from a variety of donors. If you have not yet contributed, we request you become part of this landmark restoration. New England Steam is entertaining bids to relocate the 470 immediately after the purchase. Maine businesses are donating or heavily discounting services to endorse the project. Kalmbach Publishing (Trains Mag.) has generously donated the use of the stirring blurred motion, Phil Hastings picture from the 1954 last service fan trip. We are writing, writing, writing, as winter in Maine is not a charitable time to work on a cold locomotive outdoors. We are looking at undertaking professional fundraising assistance.

In summary, we hope you approve. We invite you to join or simply donate. Please check our website regularly. You folks had our backs when we needed you, and we want you to remain at our sides, attentive and able to claim participation.

Wishing everyone a real Maine picture perfect holiday,

New England Steam Corporation thanks you!

Is there an included plan for a shop building on the Downeast Scenic?

Hi, Ira:

These guys are doing things right... here is a quote from the business plan document on their web site that should answer your question:

Quote:
Facility Construction. In partnership with the Downeast Scenic Railroad,
NESCo will construct a facility suitable to house most reconstruction
activities, as well as providing a suitable storage and operational support
facility once the 470 is in operation. This structure will be built in Ellsworth
at a suitable location adjacent to DSRR's ROW there. It will be funded as
part of the capital campaign to rebuild the locomotive, and will be the first
funding priority following the purchase, hazmat abatement, and moving
costs have been met.

Hopefully everything will go very well for 470 and her saviours.
