I've got a mystery heavyweight Pullman I'm trying to identify. A sleeper of unknown configuration, it is currently in Southern Pacific maintenance-of-way paint and stored in the Portland, OR, area. Until early 2008, it was stored on a siding in Tigard, OR, with 2 lightweight cars and a Baldwin diesel. From the 2 photographs I've looked at, the SP MW number appears to be 718.

The 2 lightweight cars were GN 48 seat coach #1130, named the "Ice Lake," and NP 56 seat "day-night" coach #587 (as Northern Central RY-Liberty Limited #56, with NCR or NCRY reporting marks).

The Baldwin diesel was Oregon & Northwestern AS616 #2 (ex-SP #5239), which was scrapped (on the siding) in November of 2009. It still had its 608A prime mover.

According to the photographer, the SP heavyweight and the #1130 "Ice Lake" were moved to another location in March of 2008. The #587 (#56) stayed at the same location with the O&NW #2 until at least October of 2008, but by the time of the scrapping of #2, it was also gone.

Here's the photographs of the SP sleeper, the 2 coaches, and the Baldwin diesel:
1. SP sleeper (vestibule end): http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1116065 (Erik Halstead photo)

2. SP sleeper (other end, with MW number visible): http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1116071 (Erik Halstead photo)

3. GN coach #1130 "Ice Lake" (the photographer makes the comment on this photo that the "Ice Lake" and SP sleeper had been moved): http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1116067 (Erik Halstead photo)

4. NP coach #586 (as #56): http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1116038 (Erik Halstead photo)

5. O&NW AS616 #2: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1116069 (Erik Halstead photo)

6. O&NW AS616 #2 being scrapped in 11/2009: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1840009 (Erik Halstead photo)

Thanks ahead of time to anyone who has any information on the SP sleeper. Also, a thank you to Erik Halstead for uploading these photographs.

Looks like a former 8 section-5 double bedroom car. As a Pullman car it would have named in the "Clover" series of names. The "Clover" series of cars were rebuilds from older cars between 1934 and 1940. These cars met the changing demand to provide more private rooms within Pullman cars.

The recent book by the Southern Pacific Historical and Technical Society about the sleeping cars on the SP lists 16 such cars that went into SP ownership.

Only one of these cars (Clover Blossom, later SP 8250) is listed as getting an SP MW number -- and that number is 7004A. The later history of this car -- assignments, any re-numberings and retirement -- is not listed. The number SPMW 7004A indicates that the car was assigned to a "relief train" that went with wreck derrick #7004.

Thank you very much for the info, Brian!

Going on that lead, the SP MW #718 is ex-SP MW #7004A, exx-SP 8-5 sleeper #8350 "Clover Blossom," exxx-Pullman "Clover Blossom," nee-Pullman "Dyersville." Constructed in Lot #4036 (1 of 2 cars) to Plan #2411 and outshopped on 9/30/1912. Changed to Plan #2411B and outshopped 11/15/1917. Rebuilt from 12-1-1* configuration to 8-5 configuration in the "Clover"-series to Plan #4036B and outshopped 12/23/1935. Part of the Pullman asset divestment on 12/31/1948. To SP for Pullman lease service. Withheld from Pullman lease on 6/20/1959. Removed from revenue service and reassigned to maintenance-of-way.

*12 sections, 1 drawing room, 1 compartment

I have another SP MofW heavyweight I'm still trying to identify (a Google search didn't provide an answer):

SPMW #7118, one of two ex-SP cars still assigned to winter MofW duties on the Natron Cutoff (Cascade Summit) in Oregon.

I listed this car on page #3, line item #87 of the "Surviving Pullman Heavyweight Sleeping Cars" thread (http://www.rypn.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=30187).

Here's the picture I linked to in that thread taken by Marty Bernard of the SPMW #7118 when it was in Seattle after being worked on by the UP shop: http://rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2238107

The work performed in Seattle included a switch from SP Daylight colors (applied by the Roseville shop at an unknown date) to UP Armour Yellow with Harbor Mist Gray roof, and changing out the plain bearings for rollers.

Using a Google search, I did find some additional photos of the car, taken in Klamath Falls, OR, where it can usually be found year-round.

1. February 20th, 1999: http://shastaroute.railfan.net/Photos/MofWay/SPMW_7118_a.jpg (John Mosbarger photo) (click once to enlarge)

4. March 11th, 1999: http://shastaroute.railfan.net/Photos/MofWay/SPMW_7118_d.jpg (John Mosbarger photo) (click once to enlarge)

Here's the website where all four of the above photos can be found: http://shastaroute.railfan.net/home.html

Photo page of the above website (the SPMW #7118 is listed under Rolling Stock, Maintenance of Way Equipment, Crew Cars): http://shastaroute.railfan.net/Photo.html#The%20Photo%20Page

I suspect that the number SPMW 718 is actually missing a number on the end... because there was another SPMW 718 that was formerly a Harriman coach...

http://rr-fallenflags.org/sp/sp-mw718axx.jpg

I show the Pullman 718 as being SPMW 7183...

The Harriman 718 apparently is 7186...

Hope that this will help in identifying both of these cars' pasts.

Thanks, Jerry, for the info!

While the SPMW #7183 Clover Blossom mystery has been solved, the SPMW #7118 still remains unidentified.
