Hi friends,

This thread will be where we post information related to the restoration of B&M 4-6-2 #3713 at the Steamtown National Historic Site, a partnership with the Lackawanna & Wyoming Valley Railway Historical Society (NRHS).

We have a lot of things in the works for this year. As the digital side of the effort grows, so will the link list. For starters, here is the official Project 3713 website:

http://www.project3713.com/

All the best,

Rob Davis

A new fundraising program is underway, the "America's Locomotive" boxcar honoring B&M #3713. The car is available in O and HO scales. See details in the PDF here: http://www.project3713.com/boxcar.pdf

Support this. In my opinion, this is the most significant restoration in a very select group of significant restorations, and deserves whatever it can be given.

This is an exciting project.

The 3713 has to be one of the newest 4-6-2s built in the United States.

It also has some interesing mechanical features, like a Vale Pilot.

Sorry but "America's Locomotive" is a bit presumptuous.

I can't get the web site to work on my impad. Am I doing something wrong?

Hi Al,

The site should work fine on all devices, but the newsletter may look a little wonky.

It is great to know #3713 has donors and supporters in RYPN community. Thank you.

Exciting times are ahead for her.

3713 was in pieces last time I saw in at Steamtown. I hope to see it running someday...

Keep up the good work. I'm pretty far away, but I still think about the various projects in PA from time to time...

I'm fairly confident the Reading's G3s were the last new Pacific's built in the U.S., but of course none survive. Not sure what the youngest extant 4-6-2 is but 3713 is a contender.

If it's been announced I missed it, but has it been decided what scheme the 3713 will wear when she's finished? Has any thought been given to recreating the elephant ears and skyline casing?

The expectation thus far is that she will wear the speed lettering and have her late-service appearance.

Personally, I'm impartial to whether #3713 does, or doesn't, have her skyline casing. However, I would love to see her with her elephant ears/smoke deflectors/"earmuffs" since hers would be substantially smaller than the smoke deflectors on any other steam locomotive in existence in the US, active or on display. Don't get me wrong. I LOVE Union Pacific #844's huge smoke deflectors. That being said, I would like to see a smaller steam locomotive sporting a smaller set of smoke deflectors. I think #3713 would look so much better with her smoke deflectors than she would without. That's my opinion, at least. Take that as you will.
