In February 1948, Union Pacific placed an order for fifty 10RM-6DB sleepers from the Budd Company, which were delivered from December 1949 to June 1950 in Budd Lot #9660-039 to Pullman Plan #9522. Excluding one car which was wrecked at an earlier date, the remaining 49 cars were assigned #14xx-series numbers in 1969 (#1401-#1449), but not all were applied. Five were sold to the Milwaukee Road (as #33-#37) that same year and remained in UP colors for the Overland Pool, one was retained, and the other 43 were sold to Amtrak in 1971 (as #2600-#2642). Several of these cars were the first sleepers to be converted to head end power (HEP) by Amtrak.

Some earlier history notes;

Car Pacific Empire was involved in the rear ending of the Train 104 "City of Los Angeles" by Train 102 "City of San Francisco" at Wyuta, Wyoming (near the Wyoming-Utah border west of Evanston) on November 12, 1951. The car was destroyed.

[The rear-end car that was also destroyed was NYC Royal Crest a Plan 4162 5DBR-buffet-lounge observation.]

The sale of cars to the Milwaukee Road was probably to provide for mileage equalization after the end of the Pullman Company operation of the sleeping cars.

Do you have a place where these fleet rosters and car whereabouts can be viewed?

REA--

For everything Union Pacific, Don Strack's Utah Rails website is a great resource, not only for passenger cars but also for steam and diesel motive power rosters.

http://utahrails.net/index.php

Don's UP passenger car roster pages, which cover both heavyweights and lightweights, can be found here:

http://utahrails.net/pass/pass-index.php

Specifically, information on the Pacific-Series 10-6 sleepers is located on this page:

http://utahrails.net/pass/named-lightweight-sleepers.php

Don also has pages on other railroads which operated/operate in Utah, including SP, WP, D&RGW, and the Utah Railway.

OK, I saw you were trying to gather current info on other groups of cars too like the Congo coaches and the cars Iowa Pacific has. It looks like somewhat of a project.

REA--

Yes, it is a large-scale project. It started out small, but over the last few years it has really snowballed. The knowledgeable members of RYPN have proven to be an invaluable resource.

I currently own "Pacific Waves" and store it in Northern California. The "Pacific Waves" was the last "Pacific" series delivered by Budd and interestingly was the last "Pacific" in revenue service between origin city Chicago and end point Los Angeles on the last "City of Los Angeles".

"Pacific Range" was on the same last pre-Amtrak train 103 as the non-revenue dormitory car, along with other "Pacifics" destined for either Portland, San Francisco and from Kansas City to LAUPT.

The original "Pacific Sunset" was scrapped at Topeka, KS after being wrecked in a derailment on the Santa Fe near Emporia, KS in 1974. The car rolled over down an embankment at nearly 79 mph, along with a former Sunset Limited 10-6, after the Southwest Chief went over a broken rail. Both cars were scrapped in Topeka.

I'm fairly certain that Pacific Home was assigned to Washington, DC in the late '80's/early '90's, working the Capitol Ltd. and Montrealer. I remember that name on at least one of those trains in that era when I was working OBS there. I worked both of those trains in the late '80's at various times, so I'm not sure which train I saw it on. It might also have been assigned to Florida service as well at some point.

Here are some more dispositions you may want to look into:

Pacific Beach reported to be at the Mississippi Fire Center

Pacific Light wrecked Kootenai, December 16, 1971, scrapped?

Pacific Meadow reported to be at the Mississippi Fire Center

Pacific Northwest reported to be Amtrak buffer car 10405

Pacific Rest stripped down to shell by owner for parts and the shell was possibly sold to Iowa Pacific

Allow me please to muddy up the waters regarding Pacific Slope, mentioned above.

I have a photograph, attached below, taken 11-8-08 in Temple, Texas, of ex AMTK Dorm-lounge 2508, now MRLX 2508 on the rear of a southbound BNSF train. It wears the name Pine Cavern, but is definately not the ex ATSF Budd of the same name. To me, it's obviously a Pacific series 10-6 Budd, I believe it to be ex AMTK 2508 Pacific Slope

That may be part of the reason there are so many unknowns on the list- Amtrak went around swapping names.
