The saga continues:

Surplus passenger rail cars at Fort Lee auctioned for about $9,000 each

Four surplus passenger rail cars at Fort Lee brought about $9,000 each at an online auction.

Another four of the 85-foot passenger rail cars will be auctioned next week. Bidding for one of the double-deck commuter cars starts at $25.

“We are the proud owners of two passenger cars from Fort Lee,” said Mathew Appelget, president and CEO of River City Recycling.

With scrap steel selling for about $350 a gross ton — 2,240 pounds — the Richmond company is recycling the cars for their steel, he said.

Valley Railroad Co. was successful bidder on the GE 80 tonner (USAF 1606).
It will probably be shipped on a steel deck flat car, off it's trucks to get the height down.

Greetings:
Former USAF 1606 arrived on a depressed center flat car at Essex this morning after being in transit for about 3 weeks.
The loading and tie down was done by Dennis Daugherty, assisted by Mike Manwiller.
We are getting set up to unload it, hopefully today.

The Baldwin is again listed at auction, bids closing 6/5/14.
The GE was unloaded at Essex last week and is awaiting tinkering...

That's pretty good, isn't it? What would scrap value be, presuming some parting out for the microscopic demand for Baldwin components, and junking the rest?

At the $350 gross ton price mentioned up thread, the S12 is worth $37,500 as scrap steel.

Selling RR equipment for scrap isn't as lucrative as some might think. That $37,500.00 might be what the scrapper gets when he sells the steel chunks to China, but the scrapper isn't going to pay that amount to acquire that S12 because he's got the expense of cutting the loco into pieces and loading the scrap for shipment to whoever buys it. If the S12 were sold to a scrapper, the S12 seller might be lucky to get 2/3 of that $350.00 per gross ton price. And, the seller would probably have to pay to ship it to the scrap yard for dismantling.

Also factor in the man-hours spent cutting it up, the huge amount of acetylene burned, the hydraulic fluid leaking out of the loader/cutter, wear and tear on the equipment, etc. The only "bonus" might be the copper in the motors, generator, air piping, etc.

I've seen/heard stories where inexperienced scrappers who overbid on locomotives and whatnot lost substantial amounts (even their proverbial shirts) on the deals once the things were finally finished off. On the other hand, I've heard of cases where the scrappers turned around and made almost their entire purchase price back just by salvaging the motors or trucks and re-selling them to someone who came begging after the torches were lit.

I learned a valuable lesson years ago when I worked for a quarry company. It was their policy to never scrap a machine in their boneyard until the last one of its type was worn out. Another life lesson was it was often possible to buy complete or nearly complete machines for parts at less cost over time than buying from the OEM.
That life lesson proved to be true on everything from Plasser tampers to locomotives. Class I auctions of retired machines and obsolete inventory are another source for those of us who's ambition exceeds the size of their wallets.

It says there's also a 10% buyer's premium.

Does the winning bidder get revealed? Do we know if in fact it's been sold to a scrapper?

This Baldwin locomotive is now listed on Sterling Rail for $44,000.

Wonder what they are doing about the short time removal?

Apparently Sterling defaulted because the locomotive is now back up on govliquidation:
Government Liquidation: 1952 Baldwin-Westinghouse Diesel Electric Locomotive

The auction opens on July 23 at 12:00AM EST and is scheduled to close on July 25 at 05:00 PM EST.
