Thanks, Al, for the info on Chickopee Falls!

CR #20 is now owned by the North Shore Railroad as NSHR #1954, named Spirit of Sunbury, painted in PRR Tuscan Red, and used on the Nittany & Bald Eagle RR in Lock Haven, PA.

Thanks for the information. I am really glad that it wound up there. They had a lot of work to do to return the last state room into something other than a generator room. There was aslo a huge hole in the floor under the raised platform in the lounde end. It sometimes got so cold in there that we had the electric heaters on full blast and we had on heavy clothing. All on the middle of the night running through the Berkshires from Selkirk to Framingham for 42 round trips with the same 18 hoppers of stone, the CR20, the 6703, and a caboose. All of this was to prove that Willy Vogel flange lubricators saved 5% fuel but did not replace wayside lubricators.

The NEBR is a different story. After I left the engineering department and joined Unit Train (formerly Coal, Coke, Iron Ore and Stone (aggregates). I became the planning manager and was also the group's rep on the Route Structure Task Force. I cooed up a deal with a certain "Roy" and he want back to a certain "Jeff and Richard" and soon Conrail had traded the Williamsport Cluster for the trackage rights on a reconstructed NBER. It would cost CR nothing except some high trackage right charges. We were not even obligated to run one train. The idea was that we could save 2 crews round trip from the MON to Strawberry Ridge Power Plant with unit trains of coal. We did not have to go through Rockville anymore. I was also tasked to budget for all of the train crews for my group so this represented a huge savings. The NBER fixed it up and aftre NS got ahold of our railroad, they re-negotiated the trackage rights. The initial fees were intended to offset the re-building on a pay as you go scheme.

As much as anyone says anything bad about Conrail, we were very much industry leaders with innovation. Decades ahead of the groups that bought us. It was a fun place to work.

Not sure that the car was converted to a Mobile Lab (as Conrail described the car in the CR diagrams book) before it became CR. It doesn't show up in the Railway Passenger Car Annuals until 1980. Does anyone have any ideas as to the Maintenance of Way number the car carried???

Here she is behind the locomotive on a public excursion on the Shamokin Valley RR (a North Shore/NBER affiliate) in May 2012. (Yes, where double PRR I1sa's used to pound on each end of the ore trains to Mount Carmel.)

I should advise that the trainset in question, including "Spirit of Sunbury," may be stored on the North Shore/NBER--maybe--but is actually owned by a former NSHR official (and avid private preservationist) who reportedly parted ways on not the best of terms with the company. The former "Robey Empire" has had to come to some negotiated terms with him to continue using the trainset after one abrupt cancellation of a public outing, but has since sought out its own cars as well, acquiring two former Ontario Midland cars and refitting a bay-window caboose into a "business car," and borrowing another privately-owned Lackawanna business heavyweight on very rare occasions.

Travel by Pullman (Welsh / Howes, MBI Publishing) describes this car as destroyed by vandals, several years after the 1966 transfer to the B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore. The book includes a very nice photo of the car in B&O livery. They also show the spelling as Genesee River (one 's'), which would be correct for the river in Western New York.

This one was rebuilt about 1990 by Precision National (along with two others, don't know the numbers right now) for MNCR's Stamford Wire Train. 2110 became a tool and parts car, another one became a crew rider/locker room/office/lunchroom car (that one went to CNZR in E. Windsor, CT via CDOT Rail). Don't recall the layout of car #3. Retired about 2009 and replaced by hi-rail tower trucks, the car was donated by CDOT Rail to RMNE. Here's the car, in Nov. 2013 during inspection at East Bridgeport Yard:

When PNC did the conversion, the windows were blanked out with plain steel sheets, a "baggage" door added to each side, and the vestibule and steps were retained, making entry and exit much easier.

Graffiti has been removed and car is looking better! The attached blue car on the right in second photo is a wire train flat, with full-length elevating tower platform--- great for lineside tree cutting!
