OK, guys, this is the best that I could do.

As many of you may know, Wasatch painted the new ARE cars. We finished 15 of the cars (don't ask me which of the 15....I can not remember) before Phil Anschutz pulled the plug on the project. The list below was the final name and number list for the cars. This list was generated and approved by Mr. A on or about April 5, 2010.

He hated a few of the names and was very vocal about it. For example, who wants to ride in the Petrified Forest or on the Crater Lake? Is the tool car really the "Death Valley?"

After the project, I had some buddies make me a full N Scale model of the train. I kept some car names on my model as they were in AOE, even though I was modeling the ARE (American Railway Explorer). For example, I kept the AOE Zurich, Paris, New York, Vienna and Denver as I felt that I had connections with all of these places. The rest of the cars I modeled in the names that are shown for the ARE.

I am more than happy to share the actual spread sheets on all of this, I simply can not copy and paste them here. If any of you want more information, please email me direct or PM me.

info@wrr.uc

I am also willing to share paint project photo files if any of you want them.

Kindly,

An Addition:

After moving to the new car shops outside of Rainier, WA (Western Junction), in 2001, AOE used a former NP baggage as a tool car.

NP baggage #233 (P-S, Lot #7024, Plan #72795, 1963) planned to be renumbered as BN #667, not applied, retained by BN. Sold (when??) to private ownership as CRTX #233. Current status unknown.

Picture taken July 10th, 2004, as CRTX #233, still in Loewy Two-Tone Green: http://abpr.railfan.net/july04/07-19-04/CRTX_233_ex-NP_baggage_at_AOE_shop_Western_Jct_WA_7-10-04.jpg (ABPR/Ken Harrison photo) (click once to enlarge)

Does anyone know who uses the CRTX reporting marks?

Some corrections and additional information on the Berlin.

11DB sleeper #1504 Placid Lake (P-S, Lot #6958, Plan #4198, 1956) to Amtrak as #2263 Placid Lake, was one of several sleepers involved in President Jimmy Carter's "Peanut Special” for the inauguration of Jimmy Carter as president on 20 January 1977. The Carter Campaign Committee chartered an 18-car train to bring supporters from Plains, Georgia to Washington and back., #2263 Placid Lake was fifth car back from locomotives,

wrecked in 10-1980?? and sold in 1981 to Indiana RY Museum (French Lick). Sold (when??) to AEE #13, upgraded for AEE by Kasten Railcar Services in 1988 and renamed Berlin (#800255), was on the AEE inaugural train from Chicago IL to Washington DC, later AOE, reconfigured to 2SR-7DB, later Grandluxe, was in the middle of a second reconfiguration at Radar Railcar in Fort Lupton, CO to 5SR-1DB when Grandluxe went out of business. Sold April 2009 to Kevin Moore (Clarion PA) as RPCX #2263 Amtrak #800255. The second reconfiguration was completed by Lancaster & Chester Railroad Passenger Car Restoration Department in Lancaster,SC. Inaugural run under new ownership was in April 2012. Currently available for charter (http://www.sleeponatrain.com), was in Seattle last September for the 2013 AAPRCO convention train to Napa, CA.

The Berlin also has the rare distinction of being a subject in a movie. The film “Johnny Berlin” is a documentary portrait of Jon Hyrns (AKA Johnny Berlin), a porter aboard a luxury train, who expounds upon his life as a struggling writer while holding down a workaday job. His stories about his oddball adventures while constantly traveling and trying to maintain some semblance of a life on board the train are simultaneously hilarious and dark. The filmmaker follows its subject on a weeklong trip down the West Coast from Seattle to Los Angeles. The film (available at Amazon.com) is ultimately an intimate, offbeat, and humorous portrait of mid-life crisis presented as a documentary monologue.

This review is from: Margaret Sky (Pocono Mountains, PA USA)
I viewed "Johnny Berlin" several times and each time it was just as enjoyable as the first. If you love trains, you will especially enjoy this film. The director takes you aboard a beautiful 1930's mahogany-interior Pullman-car train as if you just purchased a ticket for this great trip. The intriguing conversation with the porter, Johnny Berlin, who has the ability to mesmerize you with his genuine on-going conversation and stories, will make you laugh, cry and utterly astound you. You have to see it to believe it. One person inhabits most of this film, Johnny Berlin. You will be captivated as you watch this film. You will feel as if you are actually riding this great train to its destination. This film is an unusual and brilliant work of art.

MRLX #4700 is now at the Heart of Dixie RR Museum, and according to their website, the car was acquired in 2007 by Chooch & Warbucks, LLC. Did Chooch & Warbucks lease the #4700 to Mid America for operation, and was it during that time that the #4700 received MRLX reporting marks and the name Tohatchi?

The #4700 was later renamed from Tohatchi to Kayenta, although I don't know if the car was renamed before or after coming to Heart of Dixie.

MRLX 4700 was purchased by Mid America in 2004 when IFE Leasing purchased the Montana Rockies Daylight consist.

The 4700 was never named "Tohatchi" (Tohatchi is former Amtrak clocker 7620) - and was leased to the Alaska RR from 2004-2006.

The car was then given the name "Kayenta" off the list of former ATSF early lightweight sleepers, and was then sold to Chooch & Warbucks - who kept and applied the name.

The car was always in operation, never used as parts source to my knowledge.

Respectfully,

I had the #7620 as being named Tolani (#800721), so is the Tolani name applied to a different car?

On Thursday 18 September 2014 Blackmon Auctions sold off 13 GEENBRIER EXPRESS at Pottstown, PA; and the READING EAGLE newspaper has reported that most went to the UP, with a few going to either NS or NCDOT.

Of the 15 ARE cars that went to GREENBRIER in January 2011, DENVER (800740) and SAVANNAH (800741) had already gone to the NS earlier this year, and I wonder if this may have been to settle a debt with that railroad.

Of the cars auctioned off, nine were listed as “tunneled”, i.e completely stripped inside:

Bar Harbor (800753)
Charleston (800754)
Monte Carlo (800231)
Montreal (800757)
Paris (800298)
Rocky Mountain (800311)
Santa Fe (800768)
Seattle (800310)
Vienna (800109)

while four were still unaltered:

Grand Canyon (800668)
Istanbul (800297)
Monterey (800246)
Zurich (800301)

SAVANNAH is tentatively to become NS 14 MISSOURI while DENVER is to become NS 15 (no name mentioned as of yet).

In addition to these two cars two other lightweight cars have also been acquired and are to be rebuilt, though into what remains to be seen.

CB&Q 480, a PS 8 Duplex Roomette - 6 Roomette - 4 Double Bedroom sleeper (formerly stored in Illinios), to become NS 16, and Tennessee Valley RR Museum 1613, ex-Hardin Southern 714, exx-Hocking Valley Scenic RR 1613, nee-C&O 1613, a PS 52-seat coach, which is to become NS 25.

Does anyone know anything about who owned CB&Q 480 between the time the car was retired and when NS acquired it (sometime this year)?

Tolani is the 800721 - was Amtrak 4705, originally ATSF 2822. Amtrak to Rail Journeys West as "El Capitan" - sold to IFE in 2004, renamed Tolani.

Not exactly sure the lineage of the 7620, but the 4705 was still a 48 seat car, while the 7620 was converted to Clocker service with the B end lounge removed.
