Your best bet would be to shorten the axles on a standard gage trailer.

You know the ends of those axles are tapered. Easier said than done.

Also, one axle is "split" with a simple differential arrangement to allow each wheel to turn independently. This is so crews can take the car off at a crossing by pivoting it 90 degrees. (hard to do with the rims fighting each other). The two half-shafts are of different lengths. If you build a car with 1 short and 1 long halfshaft, it comes out standard gage. If you use two short halfshafts, it comes out 36" gage.

All it takes is a lathe...or a welder. It isn't difficult..... practically blacksmithing.

Thanks guys, but I'd rather not do damage to a standard gauge trailer that might come in handy for someone else.

I'll figure something out...

There's always mine and industrial rail equipment dealers. You might need to make wider axles to expand these to 3 foot gauge. Many of the carts use wheel hub mounted roller bearings, so it's a much easier cut and paste alteration, and you can build a frame out of whatever you have handy.
