Post subject: Existing C&NW Streamlined Cars
PostPosted: Mon Jan 06, 2003 1:33 pm

I'm doing some research for a project, and am trying to find how many C&NW streamlined passenger cars still exist. I'm just looking for original passenger service cars, not the 80's "business fleet" cars.
I know of the following cars:
AT IRM:
Bag/Lounge 11701
Bag/RPO 12203
Bag/RPO 8202
AT Mid-Continent:
Baggage 8903
AT IL Transit Assy:
Diner 7801
Heartland RR Hist Society:
RPO/Bag/Lounge 7600
If anyone knows of any other C&NW streamlined cars, I would appreciate any info. Thanks.

Does this count? I don't even know what it is, but it looks like some sort of streamlined express car. It's lettered simply "O" and is on display in front of the depot in Green Bay.

Could this be from the 80's fleet? I haven't seen pictures of this before.

I have one: C&NW 7000. Built in 3/50 as a coach/diner. It's located in Hooper, Nebraska.

Thanks,

I believe this car is the one used by Great Lakes Western for it's power and/or supply/tool car. I don't think it was originally C&NW though, as none of my research so far has turned up any C&NW baggage cars of this type. It does look good in yellow and green though...

It appears to be one of the shorty government kitchen cars. Amtrak used them in baggage service as their 1300 series. They were among the first HEP car conversions. I was just at Beech Grove today and there are still a couple of them on the property. I think the 765 folks have one as a tool car also.

Way out in Los Angeles there are two lightweight Pullman cars that once operated on the "City of" trains between Chicago and Los Angeles. These two cars went into C&NW ownership in the late 1940s.

The cars are HUNTERS POINT, a 4 double bedroom - 4 compartment - 2 drawing room car, and ROSE BOWL, a 18 roomette car. These cars were built in 1940 and 1937 respectively for use on the City of San Francisco; at that time ROSE BOWL was named TELEGRAPH HILL (it was renamed in 1941).

These cars along with CIVIC CENTER (another 4-4-2) were part of the Sioux Chief Traintel in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The cars eventually came under the ownership of Kyle Railways' Railroads of Hawaii and were part of the trade to Traveltown (operated by City of Los Angeles) for the Oahu 4-6-0 that then went to Maui.

The Minnesota Transportation Museum's Great Northern streamlined coaches 1096 and 1097 were originally C&NW 3453 and 3444 respectively. They were built for service on the "400", and were sold to the Great Northern in 1963.

Right you are! This car was bought from Amtrak, 1357 about eight years ago by DL&W Car Company, sold to Great Lakes Western, who last operated it on a National Railway Museum spring trip up to Marquette a couple of years ago, when it was repurchased by DLWX for a project that fizzled. DLWX has two more of these cars, one which is Amtrak legal and operated on theArcadian last summer. DLWX also has an untouched USAX version, complete with "US ARMY" coal ranges and maple ice boxes. Car built 1954 by St Louis Car Co, and is presently for sale.

A far-traveling C&NW car is club/lounge 7900, privately owned and looking nice in Cuthbert, GA. The company that owns it has kept it painted in a subdued green/yellow scheme and uses it for meetings and employee functions. They plan to keep it. Interior of the lounge looks intact.

Nice looking cars. I know that quite a number of former 400 coaches were sold in the 60s to GN,NP,CB&Q, and finally BN. So there might be more out there in "disguise" as GN,NP,CB&Q, or BN cars.

Does this count? The Webb Family/SKOL/K&O Railroad folks have among their fold a beautiful C&NW heavyweight business car named "Chicago". We see it here in Wichita, KS from time to time when they run excursions on the lines here. I don't know it's history but it's in C&NW green&yellow and is a beaut!

"Chicago" is from the 80's business car fleet. C&NW spent a lot of money on the 80's business cars, and they are all really nice cars. As far as I've determined none of them were original C&NW cars though.

I just want to thank everyone who has contributed info so far, It's a great help with my research.
If anyone else finds any former C&NW cars, or cars they think might possibly be C&NW, any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again,
