I'm hoping someone can help me. I'm looking for someone to take some photos for me or to share some they might already have of the old Carroll Park and Western Railroad Climax locomotive that is at the Roaring Camp & Big Trees Railroad in California. I need the photos for a book I am writing about the Carroll Park and Western Railroad to use in the section about where the surviving CP&W equipment is today. Unfortunately I live in Berwick, Pa and a trip to California is not possible. I can just here my wife now when I ask her, "Hun can we go to California to get some photos of a train?" Restoration of this engine to operation has been expected for 30+ years now. Is it still possible, or has some defect been discovered that is a great barrier?

This is not an official response, but...

1) Roaring Camp has sufficient locomotives for the service currently provided, so this loco is not needed, and as a "for profit" operation the investment would not be appropriate...

2) This beast is an odd gauge, and has a cast truck frame making conversion to 36" gauge challenging. A previous chief mechanical officer told me that it might be easier to convert it to standard gauge than to 36" gauge.

I'm confused.

At ERC&L it was a standard gauge loco.

Mark, read the other CP&W threads for more info, but the basic idea is that it was 4 foot gauge since the original loco purchased was that gauge. He then bought the Climax since re-gauging it was much easier than modifying a rod loco. However, going in even further to 3 foot would mean conflicts with bearings and the like.
