Continuing from the "Slide Scanner Recommendations" thread:

I recently acquired 120 Al Chione slides of GN and CB&Q passenger cars, which I will be scanning and uploading to RR Picture Archives over the next several days. These 120 slides were part of a much larger set, which originally came with a description sheet detailing when and where the slides were taken.

My understanding is that Al Chione created several such sets of these slides, so if anyone here has one of these description sheets, that would help to identify the locations and dates for the slides I purchased. Thanks in advance!

Besides that, if anyone here can identify the locations where these slides were taken, any and all info would be helpful. Thanks in advance!

I've scanned and uploaded the first 20 GN slides, the first 4 of which are included here:

Photo #1: GN 48 seat leg rest chair #1218 (P-S, 1950, Mid-Century Empire Builder):

Was the 1218 in the first photo purchased by the State of N.J. for commuter service? If so, I think I can ID the location.

And did the cars in the other 3 slides operate on Amtrak in the early days?

Yes, the #1218 (and the #1121 in photo #4) were purchased by New Jersey in 1973 and assigned to the CNJ.

#1218 to NJDOT-CNJ #109 to NJT #5316 to DLWX #5316, stored in St. Paul, MN.

#1121 to NJDOT-CNJ #134 to NJT #5306, now owned by the Cotton Belt RHS-Arkansas RR Museum as the #1947 Apple Blossom.

Photo 2: #1195 Port of Seattle was sold in 1971 to Amtrak as #3770, retired and sold in 1977 to International Hospitality Management, later to Keystone Country Furniture in Aspers, PA.

Photo 3: #1190 Choteau Coulee (ex-Mississippi River) was rebuilt in 1967 to 68 seat coach #1300 to BN #6801 (not applied) sold in 1971 to Amtrak #6801, retired and sold in 1977 to Boquet Movie Ranch.

Supposedly sold to the Minnesota Transportation Museum or affiliated agents July 2004, but arsoned 11-11-2005.

From earlier post at viewtopic.php?f=1&t=35609&p=203766 :

Quote:
GN #1195 "Port of Seattle" to Amtrak #3770. Retired and sold to Keystone Country Furniture in Aspers, PA. The Minnesota Transportation Museum had shown interest in acquiring the #1195, and a purchasing agreement was reached with the private owner who had purchased the car after Keystone Furniture had gone out of business. The car was still located in the back of the old Keystone property when it was set ablaze on November 11th, 2005. The purchase of the car by MTM became enveloped in a court case, the outcome of which I have no information on. To my knowledge, the fire-damaged #1195 is still located in Aspers, not having moved an inch.

I'm looking on Google Satellite View where the car was supposed to be, and I'm not finding it. Is it, indeed, tragically history?

Fortunately, a couple sisters survive: http://www.greatnorthernempire.net/inde ... vation.htm

Slide #1, and probably also slide #5, were taken in Elizabethport, NJ at the CNJ shops. Slide #8 was taken in Minneapolis, just south of the old depot, as far as I can tell.

Weren't Chione's slides mostly taken on the east coast? That is why I ask about Amtrak service. Possibly slide 2 was taken in Altoona? Slide 3 is probably somewhere in western Minnesota.

I will guess slide 4 is of a fantrip, due to the heads out the vestibules. Possibly in Eola (Aurora), IL?

Chris.

Thanks, Chris, for the info!

Photo #4 was taken in Denver, as the old 20th Street viaduct is in the background. This is one of several slides taken in Denver at or near Union Station.
