Thanks for the link, Rock Island!

Reading through that Port of Seattle page and looking at the photo again, this might actually show the construction of Pier 90. The webpage says that 90 and 91 were both of earthen construction (I suppose with a concrete outer wall); I had been thinking concrete wall and deck, although for the time period concrete walled with wood deck makes more sense. In fact, in the background, the temporary wood or steel pilings used to hold in the earth before the concrete was entirely poured are visible.

The Port of Seattle crane is a Brownhoist 15 tonner. This is marked by the boiler being set in the right rear corner. Here are the known matches:

Globe, AZ-Arizona Eastern RR
Brownhoist C/N 3947 16 tons Steam
AE #17 (here 05-12)

Campo, CA-San Diego Railroad Museum
Brownhoist C/N 7036 16 tons 1920 Steam (converted to Diesel) $18,724.95
US Navy #35-132
Rich Foundries Los Angeles, CA
Joseph Levin & Sons Huntington Park, CA
SDRM 09-20-85
http://www.sdrm.org/roster/equipment/rc-7036/index.html

Tampico Mexico-display
Brownhoist 15 tons steam
Port of Tampico #13

I don't know how many locomotive cranes the port had but they bought a 20 ton Browning in 1918 and a 30 ton Ohio in 1919.

John T,
Thank you for that list.
Regarding the crane in Globe, Arizona, the person who took the photo above also posted this:

Can anyone confirm that this crane in Globe, AZ, is no longer with us?

after seeing only the boom of this crane in dozens of photos I finally aquired an actual photo of the entire thing. This is the Brownhoist 15 Ton Locomotive Crane that was at the Carroll Park and Western Railroad that operated in the 1960s and 1970s just east of Bloomsburg, PA. Unfortunatly the crane was scraped in around 1973. Does anyone hae specs on the 15 ton version?

John T:
I don't know of any Brownhoist cranes of that era that survive. I wish that the railfan community would come to appreciate the almost completely forgotten machine known as a LOCOMOTIVE CRANE. It makes me cringe when I see or hear of a museum scrapping one out, ESPECIALLY a steam powered one. ANY steam powered locomotive crane is a rare beast indeed, because, when diesel and gasoline engines became available in the 1920's and 1930's the first thing the owner of a locomotive crane did was to re-power it !
I can't tell you how many places around me just here in Ohio used to have one or more locomotive cranes in use, today they are all gone !
Just like it took the railfan community to wake up to the demise of the RR Interlocking Tower I fear that we will have to loose almost all those surviving locomotive cranes before we finally wake up.

A few years back the Longshoremen's union at Tampico Mexico put a Brownhoist steam crane on display. Last summer a union official sold it for scrap which caused a rebellion among the older members. Here is an article:

The Google translation is not the best so I don't know the details.

This crane is tucked away amongst the ruins of the former Rock Island shop complex in Horton Kansas. Its boom is also there, though a couple hundred yards away from the crane. Builder's number is 913 as far as I can tell.
