The station isn't visible in this shot--it's out of sight to the right--but this photo is very close to the location, and shows the steel bridge, with the suspension bridge visible beyond it:

Of course, we have to link this postcard view of the B&O station:

Another postcard view of the PRR station, this one apparently taken from the now demolished steel bridge:

Photo from the platform of the station, looking at a riverboat, and the rear of a steam switcher:

Hooray! For once a photo of the waterfront with the station that isn't a postcard shot:

Just a cool shot with a trolley car on Main Street:

The now restored Independence Hall (where the western portion of Virginia broke away to become West Virginia in 1863), and note the tower for the street railway system:

The riverfront and the station again, this time from track level, with what looks like a pretty elderly locomotive in the station:

Before electric trolleys:

Aerial view of Wheeling from 1937; most prominent railroad features are the now demolished PRR (left) and B&O (right) freight houses. The B&O passenger station is partially visible at far right, and the PRR station is in the distance at center far left.

Another waterfront postcard:

The steel bridge is gone, the station is gone, but we have a classic riverboat:

The W&LE station shows up in this photo:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ohiocount ... 186730139/

From the 1950s, when all three bridges were still standing, as was the out of sight PRR station:

A good shot of the steel bridge with the riverboat Gordon C. Greene, which would have been a Delta Queen predecessor. (The Delta Queen's early Mississippi-Ohio days were with the Greene Line):

Interesting! The W&LE station is visible--but not the B&O facility, which hasn't been built yet. B&O's passenger facility is down by the river, in what would have then been an ancient station predating the Civil War.

The Wheeling area had a lot of floods over the years. Here is a shot of a B&O train in Triadelphia after a flash flood there (at least that's what the caption says):

From the same year as the picture that started this thread:

Independence Hall and that trolley tower mentioned earlier:

The W&LE station got it, too:

I'll admit I'm just going through the photos page by page, and what I'm finding isn't necessarily in any proper order. Not all of it is even rail related, but I couldn't help but put these up for Mr. ADM IV:

Just a classic riverboat shot:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ohiocount ... 685518015/

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ohiocount ... 685517901/

On the PRR, but well south of the station; it's not visible, but there would be a trolley line running in the street between the railroad and the Mail Pouch Tobacco buildings:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ohiocount ... 661125396/

The steel bridge, after abandonment and before complete demolition:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ohiocount ... 624461553/

That's the best, at least as far as this subject goes. There are many more photographs, including some of steel works, that readers may find interesting.

Have fun finding your own favorites!

That big passenger boat in the first picture in your last post is the Queen City, Capt. Fred Way's favorite (other than the Delta Queen...maybe.) Part of her railing is in the river museum at Clarington, OH.

Wonder if Captain Mary was at the wheel of the Gordon? She came to Wheeling to get her license way back when because the Cinci office gave her grief about it.

Notice the drastic changes in river elevation in these photos, from flood stage to low river level. The Corps of Engineers locks and dam project eliminated those wide fluctuations in water level, although occasionally floods still do happen.

I was at the station site a couple of years ago during a sternwheeler festival, but didn't know the layout of the facilities. Now I do. Thanks.

A "new" postcard view came up at the Memories of Wheeling Facebook page. Photo is from the steel bridge, looking south (west by railroad direction):
