The car Cynthia, #424 above, was later sold to a local Michigan railroad (T&SB, as I recall), then sold to the Lake State Railroad, who renovated it circa 2008, and turned it into a rather nice business car. It is presently housed in the Lake State RR roundhouse in Saginaw.

Chris -

Nice to hear that AT&SF #424 was saved and restored. Wonder if anyone has a current photo of the car?

The only T&SB business car I can find is their #1, pictured below. It doesn't appear to be the same car.

The ex-SF 424 isn't the same car as that #1 from the 1984 picture.
Ownership of the 424 isn't easy to explain, and follows a similar (confusing) story to the ownership of short lines in the state. As I recall, the Marino brothers purchased the car when they purchased the original T&SB lines in the thumb area. They eventually purchased the northern part of the AA, which became T&SB, and their thumb-area lines became Huron and Eastern. The 424 (as far as I know) passed along to H&E, which later became part of RailAmerica. H&E got the car working again with the help of the Bluewater Michigan Chapter NRHS, and used it occasionally on inspection trips and Bluewater excursions. RailAmerica sold it to Lake State. Makes sense?

The #1 in the 1984 picture (if it is the car I think it is) later received much non-prototypical work, including sliding residential-style windows, and department-store-style door and windows over the platform. Sometime in the early 2000s the Marinos moved it south out of Michigan.

And if anyone is curious, here is what the T&SB #1 later looked like:

Thanks for the photo of the 424. Must admit I prefer the Pullman Green paint over the dark blue, but overall, she still looks real good.

Item 201; was Pullman 12-1 sleeper ROWLAND, built 1910, lot 3860, plan 2410. In 1931 car was modified to plan 2410I, and went to PRR in 1948 and carried # 8923 + name. Leased to Pullman until 1958, the car was then reclassed as parlour and renumbered # 7159 + name. No interior modifications were made. In August 1966 ROWLAND was converted to WS # 493287. My information lists 1976c no further data (possibly to Conrail). Tom Madden's "Pullman Project" offers more information.

Item 202; PRR 1721 was rebuilt in sometime between January and September 1949, by PRR from an original P70 coach, number unknown. When rebuilt it received mechanical AC, newer style vestibule Dutch doors, and round windows in the washrooms. The original window format was kept, but sashes were sealed. Seating accommodated 72 passengers.

Item 204; PRR 3826 was rebuilt in sometime during 1937, by PRR-Altoona from an original P70 coach, number unknown. When rebuilt 1 vestibule was enclosed, and mechanical AC, a modernized roof, as well as 84 walkover seats were installed. The original window format was kept, but sashes were sealed.

I will guess Renovo is the location for photo 201, not long after PRR started painting its MoW equipment there in the 1960s.

In the 1980s the museum in Altoona had a very similar car there - could this possibly be the same car?

Chris.

First, thanks to Richard and Chris for all the info!

Second, 2 corrections on previously posted photos:

Photo #38 of GN baggage-dormitory #1200 was taken at Chicago.

Photo #184 of AT&SF diner #1474 Cochiti: I had stated that this photo was taken either close to or in Denver; this was indeed in Denver, as confirmed by the power pole on the far left above the GN chair.

More Pictures:

Photo #205: Plan #4060A 6S-6DB sleeper #8580 Poplar Heights (Lot #4624, 1921, rebuilt in 1937 from Plan #2411C 12S-1DR-1C Antiphon). Withheld from lease on 2/14/1966, and listed by Wayner as sold to Railcar Leasing Corporation. This car has not been mentioned before in the "Surviving Pullman" thread; does anybody know if this car is still extant? Thanks in advance! Photo likely taken in Denver.

Photo #206: Class D85c full diner #4622 (Budd, 1949, Congressional/Senator). 4 seat waiting lounge at left side, 2 sections of 8 tables each (64 seats) divided by a center bar with 2 2-seat tables. The #4622 was paired with Class D85d kitchen-dormitory #4623, semi-permanently connected at the right side with an accordion-style full-width diaphragm. #4623 had an 18 bunk dormitory and a steward's room with lower and upper bunks. #4622/#4623 to Amtrak in 1972 as #8806/#8807, retired (when??) and stored at Beech Grove until sold (when??) to Great Smoky Mountains RR, the #4622/#8806 was named Dixie Flyer, later renamed Southland, and is now named Harper; the #4623/#8807 is used as a concessions car and named Conductors Cafe. GSMR does not have the 2 cars connected. Photographed in Chicago on the same day as photo #6 in CB&Q's 14th Street coach yard.
