Today, N&W Y6a 2156 was removed from the Museum of Transportation in St. Louis and was towed across the Mississippi at 2:30 pm. This has been the first time the Y6 has crossed the river in more than 50 years.

Stay tuned as videos make their way onto the internet....

Great news! Nice video on the O scale forum of the 2156 leaving MOT, being towed out by the 2100 and 2 other units, then the 2156, 3 Norfolk Southern passenger cars and loaded hopper cars for additional brakes. IIRC the brakes on the 2156 do work for the trip.

There's a Facebook group posting pics and attempting to follow it on its route to Roanoke, VA.

Any idea on why the passenger equipment is along for the ride? Where they collecting cars along the route to return to Roanoke? I assume it somehow made sense to pick up the tender in chattanooga and bring it west to return it east, so...

The N&W Baggage car, and the "Florida" were in 4501's consist last Friday when she ventured to Cleveland and back. I was up in Chattanooga for 4501's 2015 debut in March, and the water tender and Florida were there for work, don't recall seeing the baggage/tool car.

Major kudos to all of the railroads involved for their willingness to handle a move of this type!

Heartily seconded, especially considering the policy of a certain other road. . .

Can't help but dream, but is it possible there may be a call to get her to run again? I know, I know, loads of money, restricted top speed, too much power, four cylinders and compound, too--but we can dream. . .

if we didn't dream, all these locomotives would have been cut up, or long cold rusting away forgotten in a park.

Exactly!

Dream it, come up with a good solid plan and do it.

What routing is the engine going to take to get to Roanoke? I'm assuming it's going to Danville, KY and then south down the CNO&TP to Knoxville then East to Roanoke since that's the most direct way.

If this correct what day is the engine expected to make the move down the CNO&TP down to Knoxville?

Was anybody else at the RPCA dinner with Wick Moorman as the keynote speaker in 2010? Mr. Moorman openly joked with the representative from the MOT about getting "his" Y back. I didn't think anything close to that was ever going to happen.

No, but I do remember the "Free N&W Y6a 2156. 25 years in captivity is enough!" bumper stickers that circulated for a while.

Still get a good laugh out of those.

from the nkp group

Attention, there is a special movement of an N&W 2-8-8-2 from St. Louis to Bellevue. It went through North Findlay at about 8.35 this evening travelling at about 25-30 mph.
