Good Afternoon All!

I was fortunate enough to save the former Tonowanda Harbor sleepercoach from the remains of Colorado Railcar, however, it is not a complete unit. (I do not intend to scrap it)

I was wondering if there are any other extant units located in museums or other place of preservation.

The hybrid units, made from Budd 22-room cars do not seem to be as popular to save as the original Budd 24-8 units. So now I'm curious, is it the only unit still around?

I attached a photo of the car, painted red over the stainless, many of you have unquestionably seen it this way.

Thanks!

Amtrak only had 7 of the 16-10's. There should be at least 4 that are intact as of 2015: 2050, 2051, and 2054 are privately owned and stored in Ohio; 2052 was acquired by a group in Western NY but I don't know the current status of the car. 2055 was scrapped for parts circa 2008. I believe the 2056 was wrecked and scrapped.

Amtrak had 18 of the 24-8's, but I know of only 7 of those that are mostly intact and in relatively safe hands.

Sadly, Slumbercoaches have not proven to be sexy cars for private owners to save and operate, thus many have fallen prey to purchase as parts cars because of the valuable trucks, wheels, brake systems, HEP, air conditioners, etc. to be salvaged and used on other cars.

Dan,

Congrats on acquiring the Tonawanda Harbor (NYC #10380/#10817/PC #4207/Amtrak #2005/HEP #2053)!

To expand on what Topfuel posted:

The 3 privately owned cars are stored in Lordstown, OH, along with several other ex-Amtrak cars, mostly Budd:

Harry Bechtold owns 2 of these, which he acquired at auction in Hialeah, FL, in 2001 (both had been pulled from service in 1996):

Monroe Harbor (NYC #10367/#10814/PC #4204/Amtrak #2002/HEP #2050).

Fairport Harbor (NYC #10360/#10812/PC #4202/Amtrak #2001/HEP #2051).

The third car stored in Lordstown is owned by Bill Grey, who acquired it several years ago from Bill Owen:

South Haven Harbor (NYC #10377/#10815/PC #4205/Amtrak #2003/HEP #2054). This car was also pulled from service in 1996, but I don't know exactly when Owen acquired this car, or when it was moved to Lordstown. Also, this car has been renamed Holly Harbor, which I think was applied by Owen.

The car in upstate NY is the Dunkirk Harbor (NYC #10364/#10810/PC #4200/Amtrak #2000/HEP #2052), owned by the Dunkirk Historical Society, Dunkirk, NY. Pulled from service in 1995; don't know when this car was sold, or if there was another party who owned it before the historical society.

The car that was wrecked and subsequently scrapped was the Vermillion Harbor (NYC #10372/#10818/PC #4208/Amtrak #2006/HEP #2056). Wrecked in August 1994 on the westbound #49 Lake Shore Limited at Batavia, NY; don't know when exactly this car was eventually scrapped.

The car that was parted out and scrapped several years ago was the Toledo Harbor (NYC #10379/#10816/PC #4206/Amtrak #2004/HEP #2055). Pulled from service in 1996 and subsequently acquired (date unknown) by Illinois Transit Assembly, scrapped at Gateway in 2007.

The Toledo Harbor was sold by ITAC to a group in Pueblo, CO and was scrapped in Pueblo by that group. Some of the parts (HEP mostly) is being used on the former CN "Bedford" so it can be brought up to Amtrak PV standards.

Thanks, Topfuel, for the correction and additional info on Toledo Harbor and CN/VIA 7C sleeper buffet lounge observation #1099 Bedford!
