Having moved on to more modern equipment, the Strasburg Rail Road has no more use for, and is offering our 5 ton Burro crane free of charge to any group that can use it. It was operable the last time we finished using it, and should be operable now after some maintenance and inspection. It comes with an owner’s manual. The Rail Road will spot the crane at a convenient location on a mutually agreed to loading day. Actual loading and transport is the responsibility of the new owner.

This crane comes as is, where is, with no warrantees of any type.

Per Kurt Bell’s roster of the Strasburg Rail Road:
Burro crane, built 4/1942 in Chicago, Ill. Ex-Pennsylvania RR No. 7446. Model 15, serial no. 15088 (88th model, 15 built) (per Keely via Hall). PRR records show built date as 1941, serial no. 15087, but verification is uncertain. The built date found for some other PRR Burro cranes is suspect or found to be in error (R.E. Hall). Ex-T.F. Scholes Construction, was stored at Robert E. Young Yard, Reading, Pa. Initially leased, then purchased by SRC for $400. Arrived 4?/1965. Operable.

Contact me at 717-687-8421 x115 or at Kelly@strasburgrailroad.com to discuss it further.

Curious - what is the new more modern equipment that will replace the 5-Ton Burro Crane? Glad to hear it found a home and can continue its career.

And what might be in store for the former Pennsylvania Railroad Industrial Works steam crane? If made operable, I have pondered if Strasburg would benefit in a manner similar to that of the operation and display of the steam crane at the Nevada Northern.

Also wondered why it sits out of sight at Leaman Place Junction as it could be considered an attractive display piece, either in the yard, or perhaps even on loan to the Museum across the street?

For the record, the crane in question has now been acquired by the nearby Stewartstown Railroad.

Mitch, a Pettibone and whatnot.

No plans at the moment. The CAPEX to restore it is prohibitive.

It's getting pretty ratty and it was always in the way in E. Strasburg Yard. We like it too, but if we can't present it in an attractive fashion, then it has to be out of the way until better days smile upon it.

"Mitch, a Pettibone and whatnot."

Safe to assume this is a vehicle with rubber tires? If so, does it have a provision to ride the rails or does it simply operate like a tractor?

What was the date of the move, if I might ask?

And, might you recall the date approximately when the larger steam crane was moved to Leaman Place?

Thanks!

Mitch,

The Pettibone has no high-rail provisions.

I can't recall when Stewartstown came by for the Burro - April?

The steam crane went to LPY last year.
