I recently began videoing New York Susquehanna & Western Utica NY Branch operations and activity on the Adirondack Scenic Railroad.

I am providing links to three short films.

The first shows the NYS&W descending Paris Hill's 1.8% grade plus some street running on Schuyler Street.

The second shows a NYS&W freight southbound on Schuyler Street and, a bit later, a few miles farther south, going through South Utica.

The third shows the Adirondack's first Utica-Thendara revenue run of the year, a charter organized by the New York Central System Historical Society.

Here is a video showing yesterday's rare mileage run on the Adirondack Scenic from Utica to Boonville. It is 34.9 rail miles from Utica to Boonville.

The Key Lock & Lantern organization sponsored this trip.

The rare mileage occurs from Snow Jct in Remsen to Boonville; Boonville's regular passenger service ended in May 1961. The next passenger run happened in Feb 2003 and there've been a few trips since then.

This is all former New York Central territory.

Thanks for posting these clips.

One of the things that stands out is how good the track must be on at least part of the Adirondack Scenic. I would imagine there are very few heritage roads that can run trains as fast as they seem to be on the Adirondack, and do so comfortably and safely.

And the trail crowds think that road is a failure! Bah!!

Are these the 34 miles that the trail people think they're ripping up. They might get away with it but, not without heavy opposition. I don't know about you guys but I'm ready to send my comments to them.

No, "Reading T1 2124", only the tracks from Tupper Lake to Lake Placid are in New York state's crosshairs.

It was mentioned that a few trips had run to Boonville (NY) in the past.

On May 19, 2011, I chartered a train from Utica through Boonville and on to the end of the line at Lyons Falls. The event was one of my yearly rare mileage trips operated for the Southern Appalachia Railway Museum.

Boonville is a logical destination for trips as it is the home of the Boonville Black River Canal Museum.

To quote the trip guide produced for my charter:
'July 4, 1908, was not a happy day in Boonville. On that day, the railroad had one of its worse wrecks on this line. Reports stated that “residents in Boonville woke up to the news that a train wreck just north of the village had taken six lives and injured 10 – many of them Uticans. The northbound Thousands Islands Flyer passenger train from Utica had collided head-on with a southbound freight train on the single-track Black River line. The wreck was caused by a telegrapher’s error. The Flyer had wired the telegrapher in Lyons Falls that it would wait in Boonville until 5:15 a.m. for the freight train to go by. The telegrapher mistakenly wired the freight train that the Flyer would wait until 5:55 instead of 5:15. The freight train’s engineer decided that he could easily reach Boonville by 5:55 so headed south toward the village. At 5:15, the Flyer left the village and headed north. The collision occurred at 5:30.” Photos show both trains shattered and thrown across the countryside. Locomotive 2014, a 4-6-0, can be identified but little else can.'

Bartman-TN: I sure wish I was on that trip to Lyons Falls. I remember hearing about it, one of my "railroading regrets."
