Another place on the electrified section of the Scenic Sub where the pantograph would've been raised would be while traversing the Cascade Tunnel, which at the time did not have a ventilation system, hence the electrification.

Another slide:

GN NW2 #157. The #157 was built in November 1949, 1 of 12 such engines (#151-#162) built in Order #E1098; engines were built between July and November. Later BN #494, it was retired on April 29th, 1982, and subsequently sold on July 23rd to the Diesel Supply Company. It was later acquired by CHS Incorporated as CHSX #3 and assigned to the grain elevator in Canton, SD.

Another slide:

NKP streamlined heavyweight diner-club lounge #126. Built in February 1930 by Pullman in Lot #6308 (Plan unknown) as a 36 seat coach-18 seat diner, 1 of 2 such cars (#125 and #126) built in that Lot. In 1940, both cars were rebuilt to a diner-club lounge configuration, with the coach section replaced by a 20 seat lounge (1 seat was at a writing desk), and the dining section was slightly moved from off-center (towards the kitchen) to almost dead-center; this allowed for the addition of 4 storage lockers, a crew locker, a conductor's desk and locker, and a refrigerator. Also, the vestibule at the former coach end was closed off, replaced by another locker and small restroom. In 1946-47, both cars were streamlined (#126 in '46, #125 in '47), and the number of dining seats was increased to 24, with the 3 2-seat tables on the kitchen passage side replaced by 3 4-seat tables. Following the 1964 NKP-N&W-WAB merger, these 2 cars were planned to be renumbered as N&W #1025 and #1026, which may or may not have been applied. The #126 is listed as retired in January 1966, but not sold until 1973, and I don't have any further info on this car. Meanwhile, the #125 was retired and sold in December 1965 to Jack Ferris, who named it Wabash Valley, and the #125 is now owned by Iowa Pacific. It is possible, however unconfirmed at this time, that along with Pullman sleepers Glen Fee and Woodland, that the Oregon, Pacific & Eastern RR acquired the Wabash Valley from Ferris. This would appear to be the case, as the #125, along with the 2 Pullmans, was later part of the collection of the Galveston RR Museum before going to Iowa Pacific.

Les

They use patographs on wire trains to ground the catenary while the people are working on it.

NKP 15' RPO-baggage-messenger #361. This is a very late heavyweight, built by StLCCo in 1934 in Lot #1570 as #345 (1st). In 1964 it was renumbered N&W #1261, and was retired in 1968.

I'm curious as to what NKP #361 was coupled to. Doesn't appear to be one of the Nickel Plate's "Bluebird" PA's. Almost looks like it could be an orange and blue C&EI unit. Might this photo be cropped and the original have more of what that unit might be?

Thanks.

Les, the scan of the slide is slightly cropped automatically by the scanner, and this is something I am still trying to figure out how to turn off entirely. However, I looked at the actual slide, and there isn't much more visible than what can be seen here. Two of the digits in the numberboard of the engine (which I'm thinking is an E Unit) appear to be an 8 and a 0, so either #x80 or #80x, and these don't match up with any of the covered wagons on the C&EI roster. Specifically, the C&EI had 4 E Units: 3 E7A's, #1100-#1102, built in 1946, and E9Am #1102 (2nd), which was built in 1958 using parts from the wrecked #1102 (1st). #1100-#1101 first became MP #27-#28, and then L&N #798-#799, and #1102 (2nd) became MP #43.

Another slide:

NKP automobile-baggage #344, 1 of 2 such cars (the other being #343) built by Pullman in December 1929, at the same time as baggage-express #329-#332. #343-#344 became N&W #1281-#1282, and the #1282 was transferred to the MofW department in August 1969 as tool car #526706. It is now in the collection of the Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum. Les, do you recall when HVSR acquired this car from N&W or NS?

Les,

Looks to me to be a "blue dipped" Wabash E8.

Ted -

Donated by NS in September of 1989; part of a six piece equipment gift that were instrumental in turning the "Miami County Steam Locomotive Association" from a locomotive restoration group into a railroad museum.

Don -

I think you may be right! I looked for a photo on the internet and came up with this one of Wabash 1009 back in 1973:

http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.p ... 31&nseq=38

So if this IS NKP RPO/baggage #361 behind a Wabash E unit, wonder why? BTW, for those not informed, the 1009 has recently been restored and given her original blue/gray/white paint scheme. The "blue dipped" scheme was a later one applied by the Wabash to cut painting costs.

I'm now wondering if this slide of the NKP #361 behind a Wabash E dates from sometime after the merger in 1964, as this would explain the interesting lashup.

Ted,
I am intrigued by image 229 of PRR "Crane Creek". After looking at the date given for the shot and comparing the consist (with the C&O sleeper on the left and a GN sleeper on the right), I strongly believe this to be the last Illini RR Club's "Journey to Yesterday" at Denver. With the angle of the sun, I suspect the shot was taken on Saturday, June 18, 1966, the afternoon/evening that the train departed for Chicago, not July 9.

I kick myself for not recording the consist of the train and have wondered for almost 50 years if anyone else recorded it. Through slides taken from the vestibule, I have been able to pretty much determine the ownership of the cars in the train but not the individual car names beyond four are that I specifically remember, and now thanks to this post, PRR "Crane Creek".

Do you have any other images taken in Denver specifically dated June 13 or June 18, 1966, that might be of this train? Of the 20 car train that departed Denver on June 13, 1966, all were lightweight Pullmans excepting an SP baggage car, a Rio Grande lightweight coach, CB&Q 54 seat dome coach "Silver Stream", Rio Grande counter-lounge "Castle Gate", a heavyweight Rio Grande diner, heavyweight sleeper "Joaquin Miller" and heavyweight open platform observation "Captain Hook". Sleepers of NP, Mopac, C&O, GN, ACL and PRR were in the train. A stab in the dark but you never know what will turn up in someone's collection. Thanks for any assistance.

Don,

I don't have any other slides where I've identified the date as June 13th or 18th, 1966.

Another slide:

GN F7A #364C and an A-B-B-A set are the power for a westbound passenger train at Cashmere, WA, on February 8th, 1964. There are at least 6 SP&S heavyweight coaches on this train, and this is obviously a special of some sort. The passenger-geared #364C was 1 of 6 passenger F7A's built in October 1950, along with #363A & C, #364A, and #365A & C. The #364C was later BN #9728, and was sold to Precision National in November 1974.

Several slides have had the locations identified or more info found:

Photos #23 (GN #1164 Logan Pass), #36 (#1166 Lincoln Pass), and #40 (#1168 Red Gap Pass) were taken in Chicago, either at Pullman's Calumet Yard or at CB&Q's 14th Street Coach Yard. The small lettering added at both ends reads: "this car shipped from storage in Pullman Company shops Calumet to CB&Q R.R. [illegible] N. Canal St. Chicago Illn. Not to be [illegible] in revenue service."

Photo #34 of GN #1196 Port of Vancouver was taken at Everett, WA, specifically of the southbound Morning International, which connected with NP's Seattle-to-Portland pool train #408 at King Street Station.

Photos #42 (GN #966) and #46 (#964) were taken in Portland, OR, specifically of GN's northbound Portland-to-Seattle pool train #459, which has just left Union Station.

Photo #50 (GN #1380 Suiattle Pass) was taken in the King Street coach yard in Seattle.

Photo #51 (GN #994) taken in Seattle just south of King Street Station: this is GN's southbound Seattle-to-Portland pool train #460.

Photo #165 (AT&SF Regal River). This appears to be somewhere on Raton Pass, but where exactly I'm not certain.

Photo #170 (AT&SF #1344). Another slide of this train (same location/day) is on the front cover of the Santa Fe RY Historical & Modeling Society's "Passenger Car Reference Series Volume Five: Sleeping Cars of the Santa Fe", which is identified as a Stuart J. Sutton slide, taken on Raton Pass, specifically on the curve next to the Wootten Ranch sign. Of the Al Chione dupes I've acquired, so far I've identifed one other slide as being taken by Sutton: #52 of GN #1107 in St. Paul.

Image

Photo #182 (AT&SF #1528). Another slide of this car (same location/day) is identified as being taken in Denver in February 1964.

Photo #183 (AT&SF Tsankawi). Another duplicate of this slide was listed on eBay, which was identified as being taken in Denver in April 1963.

Photo #197 (AT&SF Regal Lane). This slide was taken on the same day and at the same location as #165.
