LS&I 21 is moved to Wisconsin

Or, we could just chalk it up as gone and move onto productive efforts. Leaves the door open for a possible but improbable surprise in the future.

Well, Yes and No. It would be nice to have a concrete conclusion on this story with photo proof if possible.

Well, I keep digging around for clues as to what happened to the LS&I #32 and found this interesting blip in an old news paper. http://cdnc.ucr.edu/cgi-bin/cdnc?a=d&d=DS19670323.2.43

I also received an Email from a person who I will leave anonymous that claims the 32 still exist. But, He had no further information or photos.

I'm thinking maybe the rusting hulk is either A. In tiny pieces on the Eglin AFB or B. Was scrapped at some point in the 1970's. C. Would have the locomotive transferred to another AFB. But this seems unlikely to me.

Somehow I missed your comments from back in August. Here are two photos taken up at North Lake in March of 2013. Are these the running gear and boiler for LS&I #21? Any idea as to how the restoration is coming there in Oak Creek?

The military is capable of just about anything ain't they? I would love to know how they did it and why a steamer vs a diesel locomotive vs a giant steam locomotive prop on rails with a truck engine?

More importantly I would like to know what happened to the LS&I #32 after all of this was said and done???

On my visit to North Lake back in 2013 (with permission from Steven), I also took photos of a couple of LS&I tenders. Those photos are included. I'm not sure which of these was the one used behind the 21. On the first tender, the trucks had LS&I cast into the frames and on the second, LS&I lettering could still faintly be seen on the tender's side.

I remember being contacted a while back by a couple of fellows who read my plea on the LS&I mailing list, One said the LS&I #32 still exist??? I will believe that when Santa Claus shows himself. The other fellow said the #32 was setup for remote control and then used as a rolling target.

Sigh, I guess we may never know the truth on the fate of the H16 #32.

Only a decent photo of her blown to bits or a pile of scrap will conclude this long standing mystery.

Although this has absolutely nothing to do with LS&I 21.... I did find this interesting rust pile on google earth/maps at Eglin AFB. Coordinates are 30°39'03.8"N 86°23'53.6"W.

Whatever it is it's next to the ROW. Looks to me like a passenger car or flat car. If this is the case, maybe there could be a locomotive, or chunks of locomotive, nearby.

Those could easily be a pair of oil adapted tenders, but I see nothing that resembles tracks in the area.

Take a really good look. You can find existing track nearby, and what really looks like an abandoned right of way from here to there.

The track ends in what looks like a bunker. Possibly:

a) this was part of that old scheme to put missiles in moving boxcars

b) one of the missing Nazi gold trains is there

c) the steam locomotive is a military secret hidden in the bunker

We really need someone with ties in the USAF to help out in the search for the LS&I #32. The locomotive could still exist or be razor blades. But, we will never know without some kind of official word on the matter.

I seem to have a memory in the dim, dark, recesses of my mind, that one of the Kentucky and Tennessee 2-8-2's also may have wound up at Eglin for target practice as well. Is there any one out there that can enlighten me or help my memories on this as well?
