"CB&Q 44 seat chair-snack bar #340 Silver Parlor in Denver in September 1969. As the name implies, the #340 was originally built in 1949 as a 30 seat parlor with 5 seat drawing room, 1 of 2 such cars (the other was #341 Silver Chair) built in Lot #9628-036 for the Twin Cities Zephyr. In 1968, both cars were reconfigured to the chair-snack bar format...

Cars converted for use as supplementary food service cars on Denver Zephyr. They had propane stoves and thus hot food capability.

....and I believe these cars were planned to be renumbered to BN #6142-#6143 respectively, and it is possible that the Silver Chair became #6143 before the startup of Amtrak, which acquired these 2 cars as #3920-#3921, with seating increased to 52. The #3921 was retired (when??), stored, and later (when??) sold to a private owner in Hodgkins, IL.....

Silver Chair ownership after Amtrak is fuzzy, but believe sold at auction circa 1983 to Peter Robbins and stored in Michigan. Later believed sold to Richard Kughn (sp?) who reportedly had ownership interest in Lionel Trains. Sold circa 1995 to Ben Butterworth. Resold 1995 to Jon Clark. Moved from Michigan to storage in Hodgkins, IL. Moved to Cohocton, NY in 2007. Stored on former Erie trackage served by B&H in Cohocton.

....while the Silver Parlor was converted/reconfigured in 1984 to HEP buffet-diner #8704 for the Auto Train. The #8704 was stored in October 1994 and listed for sale in October 1995, and in 2007 was acquired by the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic RR and placed in service with the name Furnace Run. Was there another party which owned the #8704 from 1995 to 2007, or was it stored at Beech Grove that entire time?....."

Believe former Silver Parlor owned by John Wood of OK during 1995 to 2007.

After talking with Mr. Chione, I have voluntarily removed all 249 scans of his slides from RR Picture Archives. My apologies for any inconvenience this has caused. For those who still want to "keep score", when and if I learn any further details about where, when, or by whom these slides were taken, I will post that info into this thread. Thanks again to all the forum members who have provided locations and other info over the last several months. This was a fun project.

This is a real shame. These slides otherwise will stay in a shoebox on the top shelf of some closet and not be able to be enjoyed by many people. I'm glad I "clicked and saved" the shots that were of interest when I had the chance.

I may be wrong, but I believe that the "Solomon" is now on the Little River Railroad that currently runs out of Coldwater, Michigan. Here's a recent photo:

Additions & Corrections:

Corrections:

Photos #228 of PRR Class B60b baggage-express #9181 and #241 of NP Plan #3973A 10S-1DR-1C sleeper #700 Chief American Horse, both taken in Dallas, were more than likely taken by Dick Kuelbs.

Additions:

Even though I won't be posting them, I recently acquired some additional Al Chione dupes of passenger cars: 2 MILW lightweights, and a set of 20 UP slides. For those who are "keeping score", here's the info for these slides.

The 2 MILW slides were P-S lightweight sleepers. Besides these 2, I acquired 4 other slides of MILW P-S lightweight sleepers that I will eventually get around to posting in the "Scanner Recommendations" thread.

Plan #4137 10RM-6DB #5 Lake Oconomowoc (Lot #6775, 1948), withheld from lease in 1966, retired in 1971 and sold to David R. Vannes (Madison, WI), later resold to a private owner and located on the Michigan Northern in Cadillac. This slide appears to have been taken at the same location as photo #238 of PRR Plan #9007 14RM-2DR #8359 Anacostia River (AC&F, Lot #3098, 1950, Champion pool).

Plan #4135 8DXR-6RM-4DB #20 St. Joe River (Lot #6775, 1948), withheld from lease in 1965, retired in 1969 and scrapped.

The 20 UP slides were:

Modernized/streamlined business car #103 (3rd) (ex-#101 Overland, Pullman, 1912/37/69), to #109 (2nd), sold to WP as Feather River, back to UP via merger, transferred to MP as #3 Kansas City, to UP #115 (3rd), named Selma, to UPP #115 Selma.

Modernized business car LA&SL #111, ex-#120 (1st) (exx-café observation #1567, nee-observation #4407, Pullman, 1926/43/68/71), sold in 1987 to SCD, reported on Don Strack’s website as #3593 Agualeguas, which in my notes I have as the ex-LA&SL #110, exx-#121, exxx-#1565, nee-#4405, and which is now KCS de Mexico #1810 Ciudad de Mexico. Also in my notes, I have that after the sale, the #111 was named Monte Alban, but I don’t have a number.

P-S prewar lightweight chair #5325 (Lot #6510, Plan #7385, 1937), retired in 1967 and sold for scrap in 1968 to Sam Barter Machinery & Supply in Denver. Just a guess, but with mountains in the background and a broken window, this slide might be taken in Denver of the #5325 right before or after sale to Barter.

AC&F lightweight Plan #6009 11DB sleeper #1601 Sun Cape (ex-Plan #9004 12RM-4DB sleeper Western Adventure, Lot #3069, 1950/65), sold in 1987 to SCD as #736 Iztaccihuatl.

P-S lightweight Plan #6008 11DB sleeper #1707 Star View (ex-Plan #4199 5DB sleeper-"Redwood" 24 seat club lounge Pendleton, Lot #6959, 1956/65), sold in 1971 to Amtrak #2256, stored in 1981 and sold in 1982 to Anbel Corporation, resold in 1983 to SCD as #735 Cadiz.

Dome lounge #9000 in Denver (AC&F, Lot #4096, 1955), to Auto Train #900, to Robert Snow's Church Street Station in Orlando, moved to Main Street Station Casino in Las Vegas.

Budd Plan #9522 10RM-6DB sleeper #1409 Pacific Cove (Lot #9660-039, 1950), to Amtrak #2607, converted in 1980 to HEP #2441, retired in 1995 and sold to private ownership #800037. Another copy of this slide lists that it was taken in Denver in 1968.

Streamlined heavyweight 36 seat diner #3610 (ex-#310, Pullman, 1927/32/42), retired in 1964. Another copy of this slide lists that it was taken in Denver in 1964; I'm thinking right before or after this diner was sold for scrap, likely to Barter. The dining room windows and kitchen door are missing.

Arch-roof baggage #3064 (Standard Steel, 1929). The #3064 was 1 of 23 such cars from this Lot (of a total of 25) that were stripped down to flat cars in 1968 for the MofW (roadway) department, numbers unknown. This excluded the wrecked #3052 (12/24/1939) and #3061 (2/18/1963). Another copy of this slide lists that it was taken in Denver in 1966.

Wood open platform car in MofW service as #901279. The car is literally being held together by braces added at one of the end posts! I don't know the history for this car.

AC&F lightweight Plan #6009 11DB sleeper #1611 Sun Slope (ex-12-4 Western Wonderland), now 7BD crew sleeper UPP #314 Columbia River (#800488).

AC&F lightweight Plan #6009 11DB sleeper #1602 Sun Isle (ex-12-4 Western Hills), now 8BD deluxe sleeper UPP #1602 Green River.

Streamlined heavyweight 48 seat chair #500 (ex-44 seat chair #442, Pullman, 1928/39), retired in 1968 and sold in 1969 to Bill Kratville's Autoliner Corporation, not selected for refurbishing and scrapped at an unknown date.

AC&F lightweight Plan #6009 11DB sleeper #1607 Sun Point (ex-12-4 Western Slope), sold in 1987 to SCD as #737 Popocatepetl. Taken in Denver.

Streamlined heavyweight 40 seat diner #4053 (ex-42 seat café lounge #2453, nee-30 seat diner #353, Pullman, 1914/37/43/??), transferred to MofW department in 1953 as #904365, retired in 1987 and sold/donated to museum in Hermiston, OR. Taken in Denver.

Pullman Plan #3410A 12S-1DR sleeper Pelham (Lot #6023, 1926), transferred to MofW department in 1964 as #906032, retired in 1974 and sold to Skagit Station Restaurant in Sedro-Woolley, WA, renamed Cascade Pass, later resold to Track 29 complex in Yakima, WA, scrapped in September 2013. "Surviving Pullman" thread line item #83.

AC&F lightweight Plan #6009 11DB sleeper #1605 Sun Manor (ex-12-4 Western Plains), now 4BD deluxe sleeper UPP #1605 Powder River (#800623).

Budd Plan #9522 10RM-6DB sleeper #1403 Pacific Beauty, to Amtrak #2602, converted in 1979 to HEP #2880, retired in 2001 and sold to Friends of the 261, now Loram Rail Grinding (LMIX/CNRX) #2660.

Streamlined heavyweight 36 seat diner #3606 (ex-#306, Pullman, 1927/32/40), retired in 1964. Appears to be taken the same day/location as the slide of #3610.

AC&F lightweight Plan #9005/#9005A 6S-6RM-4DB sleeper #1103 American View (Lot #3070, 1950), 2 sections removed in 1962 to make room for buffet serving area, retired in 1972 and sold to Mineral King Foundry, later to a café in Fresno, then to Rod Basich, now RBBX #40014.

The original version of this slide is currently listed for sale on eBay, and it is listed as taken in Denver in November 1962, but the photographer is not listed. The original also seems to be slightly less cropped than the Al Chione dupe. Here's the image as posted on the eBay sale page:

For those who are still "keeping score", I've acquired several additional Al Chione slides in the last several months:

Pullman 12S-1DR sleeper McCurtain (Lot #4845, Plan #3410/A, 1925, general service pool, retained by Pullman at divestiture, sold for scrap in January 1966 to Hyman-Michaels). Date and location are unknown; coupled to an unidentified Tuscan Red-painted heavyweight sleeper to the left.

Pullman 6S-4RM-4DB sleeper Fir Zone (Lot #4932, Plan #4179, 1926/50, general service pool, ex-Plan #3584A 10S-2DR Point View [general service pool, retained by Pullman at divestiture], sold for scrap in March 1966 to Hyman-Michaels). Taken in Denver (being switched by D&RGW S2 #106), date is unknown, lettered as sleeper "TS3" (more than likely for "tourist sleeper"); coupled to an unidentified MP lightweight.

RF&P 8S-5DB sleeper Clover Woods (Lot #3880, Plan #4036B, 1911/36, Mountaineer, ex-Plan #2411/B 12S-1C-1DR Woods Lake [NYC], sold at the 12/31/1948 divestiture to RF&P, painted in Two-Tone Gray in 1955, withheld from lease February 1965, transferred to MofW department as #20063, no further info). Taken in Denver, in TTG paint (no RF&P lettering), date is unknown.

PRR 12DXR-5DB sleeper #8022 Major Brook (P-S, Lot #6538, Plan #4066B, 1938, retired and scrapped in 1967). Taken in 1962, location is unknown, lettered as sleeper "NY7"; coupled to an unidentified streamlined heavyweight.

PRR 10RM-6DB sleeper #8317 Octoraro Rapids (P-S, Lot #6792, Plan #4140, 1948, to PC #4350, retired and scrapped in 1970). Taken in 1952, location is unknown, lettered as sleeper "FT2"; coupled to an unidentified fluted side lightweight sleeper.

PRR 21RM sleeper #8243 Ashtabula Inn (Budd, Lot #9667-024, Plan #9513, 1949/63/80/91, to 64 seat coach-12 seat smoker #1536 [name removed], to PC/NJDOT/NJT #5435/MARC #168 [name reapplied]/Akron Metro RTA/leased to CVSR). Taken in Dallas in 1962, so most likely taken by Dick Kuelbs.

PRR 12DXR-4DB sleeper #8383 Cross Creek (P-S, Lot #6792, Plan #4130, 1949, retired in 1968 and sold to Judge Roy Hofheinz, later scrapped). Taken in New Orleans in 1967, so most likely taken by Dick Kuelbs; lettered as sleeper "LOK8".

MILW 10RM-6DB sleeper #10 Lake Kapowsin (P-S, Lot #6775, Plan #4137, 1948, retired and scrapped in 1969). Taken in Chicago.

These 2 slides were also taken in Dallas, so most likely also taken by Dick Kuelbs.

The slide of the Fir Zone was taken on December 14th, 1963, and the slide of the Clover Woods was taken in January 1963.

The slide of the Major Brook was taken on June 3rd, 1962, and the slide of the Octoraro Rapids was taken on October 27th, 1962, not in 1952 as previously stated.

The slide of the Ashtabula Inn was taken on August 18th, 1962, and the slide of the Cross Creek was taken on December 29th, 1967.

Additional Al Chione duplicates I've acquired recently are:

PRR Class PS124 12DXSB-4DB sleeper #8369 Chippewa Creek (P-S, Lot #6792, Plan #4130, 1949, to PC #4362, retired in 1971 and sold to the Pacific Railroad Society, later had #800375 applied). Taken in New Orleans on December 29th, 1967, so most likely taken by Dick Kuelbs.

PRR Class PS106B 10RM-6DB sleeper #8335 Chester (Budd, Lot #9662-025, Plan #9503, 1949, SAL pool, to PC #4369, retired and scrapped in 1971). Taken in Dallas on August 1st, 1964, so most likely taken by Dick Kuelbs.

PRR Class PS105A 10RM-5DB sleeper #8073 Cascade Brim (P-S, Lot #6610, Plan #4072C, 1940, retired in 1967 and sold in 1968 to the US Army as USAX #89573, acquired by Amtrak in 1973 as #2510, retired in August 1975 and sold to Tuman Demolition [Indianapolis], resold to Kirk Potter, resold to Pullman Travel Company [Wheaton, IL], leased to Golden Arrow Line, Ltd. [GALT, Gurnee, IL], renamed Cascade Foam, intended to be #1051, no further disposition info). Taken in Dallas on June 14th, 1964, so most likely taken by Dick Kuelbs, boarding number is "79".

PRR Class PS124 12DXSB-4DB sleeper #8378 Conewago Creek (P-S, Lot #6792, Plan #4130, 1949, to PC #4365, retired and scrapped in 1971). Taken in Fort Worth on February 3rd, 1963, so most likely taken by Dick Kuelbs.

I've seen a number of other Al Chione passenger car slides come up for sale in the last several months which I have not acquired:

Pullman-owned 6S-6DB sleeper Poplar Summit (Lot #4845, Plan #4084A, 1925/39, ex-Plan #3410 12S-1DR sleeper McClung), painted for service on ACL July 1941 to October 1942, retained by Pullman at 12/31/1948 divestiture, painted PRR Tuscan Red July 1949 to November 1951, painted Two-Tone Gray as of July 1954, sold in June 1967 to Reuben Darby-Darby Wood Products, later (when??) acquired by Lake Shore RHS, under long-term lease to Iowa Pacific. Has this car left North East, PA, yet? Taken in Denver on August 17th, 1964, coupled on the right to another, unidentified heavyweight lettered for the NRHS above a pocket door vestibule. "Surviving Pullman" thread line item #154.

This slide was taken in Denver, as I realized that the buildings in the background are the same as those in the slide of Pullman-owned heavyweight 6S-4RM-4DB sleeper Fir Zone, which was being switched by D&RGW S2 #106.

These 2 slides were also taken in Denver. I recently acquired a number of black & white photos of NP and CB&Q cars, one of which, included below, is of 52 seat chair #4713 Silver Forest (Budd, 1940, general service pool). In this photo, visible in the background is the previously-identified Denver U.S. Post Office building, and the bridge which is seen in the slides of the Silver Siesta and Silver Wave.
