Hi,

A while back, the PRR mule from the RRMofP going to Ohio (?) was mentioned as one ugly machine.

Here is an image of one of four or five Cherokee Brick 0-6-0ts built by Glover Machine Works.

I think it deserves honerable mention at least.

Glover built about 200 steam locomotives. Six are known to survive and I have heard rumor that one more is around in a private collection.

Two are the ugly Cherokee Brick locos. One had two of its drivers taken to replace diesel wheel sets so it is an 0-2-0t <GIRM>.

Hi,

In case you are interested, Cherokee Brick had a plant railroad that was on both sides of Southern (or predicessor IIRC). It was an at-grade crossing. Later on, Southern wanted to raise the track so the bridge over a nearby river would clear river traffic.

Cherokee Brick was given the option of a grade crossing with steep grades on both sides or a low clearance under the approach trestle (9-10 feet).

Looks like a large mining steamer or a squat industrial switcher.

Actually, in the photos they look quite nice for an industrial locomotive. British railroad historian O. S. Nock had his opinions on the ugliness of many American steam locomotives (as compared to their more refined British counterparts) but I hardly think that these would meet his definition of ugly.
