Hey guys,

I know we all at one time used ABC Brake Shoe company for A24 size brake shoes....? I can not find them. Anybody know who is making larger size brake shoes for coaches and locomotives? Help.

Thanks,

Please post up if this turns out to be a viable source.

On a related topic, I have a list (with index) of contractors/suppliers of steam locomotive services and parts on my webpage:

http://www.trainweb.org/tusp/r_links.html

It hasn't been updated recently, so some of the links may not be valid or the companies may be out of business. Suggestions for corrections or additions are always appreciated.

About 10 years ago while the 765 was being overhauled for her THIRD CAREER, the FWRHS put together a group order for A24 locomotive driver brake shoes. Several dozen organizations- including the US Govt - got in on it. Vendors did not want to deal with multiple entities and small orders. It all went well and many organizations stocked up at that time. Is it time again?

We have had custom, cast iron shoes made up for streetcars at various times by McCoy Foundry near Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. If you have the material spec. / hardness you want and a pattern, they can probably do a reasonably-sized run. Contact there is Vern Mills, sorry, I don't have the details with me at the moment.

John,

You could try the Williamsport Foundry in Williamsport, PA. They seem very conducive to preservation groups and have made one-off castings for us including a brake shoe for the blind driver on CNJ 113. This casting included the backer plate which was cast in. We supplied the pattern and backer plate. If you email me your email address, I can send you photos: rrproject113@hotmail.com. I would post them here but haven't learned how to do it. If you go to our website: rrproject113.org, you can see some of the castings we have had made there.

I have a few A24 brake shoes and ran an ad offering them for sale on here before and never got a single response.

Mine came off an Alco MRS1 military locomotive. Never would have thought that they would work on a larger driver diameter of a steam locomotive.

I also have several of the brake heads for them that also came off this Alco. They are in like never condition. The locomotive had less then 150 hours of operation.

Hi guys,

All of the options that have been posted seem very viable. Thank you!

I also received this one from my favorite shop out east, Wasatch East (I mean Strasburg.. :-), who, as always is also very willing to share everything they have and know. These are composition shoes and our Freight Car Shop in Shoshoni, WY. uses Cobra Products. I had no idea Cobra made locomotive style shoes.

Looks like we have plenty of options left in the industry for good shoes.

I may be easy, but as everyone here knows, I'm not cheap.

BTW, ixnay on the asatchWay East!! As I see it, there is a certain shop in a cold and windy place that wishes they were Strasburg West...
