My buddy was watching "The Blue and the Gray" recently and was posting photos of the locomotive in the movie. Upon Googling the movie it seems to have been filmed on the Eureka Springs and North Arkansas, a small dinner train outfit today, with ex-C&EI SW1 #98 as their sole operational power.

However, the movie shows a small "American-ized" 0-4-0 and tender. Upon looking at the roster, the ES&NA has owned several 2-6-0's and one small German narrow gauge 0-4-0. Now, I am wondering is the 0-4-0 was the power used in the movie? As the ES&NA Moguls are WAY too big to represent this little thing:

Portions of the movie were filmed on a the tourist line Eureka Springs and Beaver Railroad which went out of business shortly after the filming of the movie. The two locomotives ended up in Branson, MO for a time (I saw them in 1992) and have now moved on.

Here's the 2 locomotives:

The 0-4-0 is a tiny 600mm gauge (bit less then 24 inch) german switch engine.

The two railroads involved were the Eureka Springs Railroad at Beaver, Arkansas, and the Eureka Springs & North Arkansas at Eureka Springs, Arkansas.

The Younger brothers had a long history with trying to preserve parts of the Missouri & North Arkansas, and they started a short railroad (about 2 miles long) on the old right-of-way in Beaver. The operation closed about 1985 and the track was gone by 1987. I was there several times and I remember it as a standard gauge operation.

Bob Dortch built the ES&NA using items from his farm railroad. It was also about 2 miles long and used the grade of the former Eureka Springs Branch of the M&NA. It was also standard gauge and still runs today, although without steam. The narrow gauge loco used on the sign was bought for display and never ran on either operation, but makes a neat sign.

The TV movie was filmed on both railroads over a week or two. They were only about 10 miles apart
