The proposed track geometry car is going to look just fine, isn't it?

Nice shot. Thanks for posting it.

Correction:

Last I was told, it's going to be "a car that accompanies the track geometry train."

Could be track geometry car. Could be sleeper and office car. Could be self-contained camper car. Whatever.

No matter what NS has in store, it will always be "Perry's Car."

But why would they choose a 1926 heavyweight to convert into a modern geometry car? Aren't there newer candidates that would serve the purpose better? Or is this a case of "They don't build them like this anymore!" and this 1926 car built to battleship-specs is more likely to survive than a postwar Budd or PS car?

This car was rebuilt by ACF in Berwick, PA in the 1950's. Those 3 axles roller-bearing trucks were part of the rebuild. During the last 5 years when a number of people attempted to buy the car, some of them just wanted the trucks. They are what make the car desirable (beyond those of us interested in its history).

My understanding is, NS has several older obs available as potential candidates for the conversion. This car has the trucks and can be completely gutted for rewiring, new space features, isolated electronics, and application of electronic sensors. There may be quarters on board, but this is no dormitory.

Is it just me, or are there dents in the sides about where it would be jacked? I've seen it in the other photos, too.

Just an observation I made if you look in the images provided in the Bangor Daily News article that was also provided in the original post that kicked off this topic, you will see a number of images provided with the article. A number of the images show the car during its multiple lifts required to walk it across the parking lot back to live rail in Pittsburgh. If you notice the crane company hooked the large hooks directly under the side sill and it was lifted from different locations each time leaving dents in the body from the hooks. While the spreader bars did their jobs the hooks really left their marks... This would require removal of side body panel sections to replace dented material and straighten the structural members underneath that were bent as well. Expect repair to side sills as well were car weight rested on the hooks... Keep in mind that a lot of these repairs would not be as easy if complete interior was still present.

Again just my observations.

Update from two sources wishing to remain unnamed:

The Belford arrived in Roanoke at 8pm tonight (Monday 16th Jan.), and the plan is for a yard crew to switch it over to the Research & Test Coach yard (located beside Roanoke's Famous N&W East End Locomotive Shops) on 1st or 2nd shift Tuesday.

Possible conclusion for this thread? From here, we can start a new one......

The other car is NS 32, former NYC 1.
