Seems like it is time to start funding a pro-rail, anti-trail lobby before this gets out of hand. Other than neglect and rust, this could be our #1 enemy.

Yeah, I kind of wonder if the Rails-to-Trails people have incriminating photos of politicians. They are doing incredible damage to potentially productive branch lines everywhere. The caveat of "the rails can be replaced if that is desired" is such a pile of manure, but people buy it.

As of June 19, Revolution Rail was seeking new employees for their rail-riding operation through a classified advertisement posted in the hospitality jobs section of Albany Craigslist. The ad seeks people to lead rail excursions, check in customers and promote branded merchandise. Both full-time and part-time seasonal jobs are available, ranging from $12 to $15 per hour depending on experience, according to the ad, which cites a North Creek address.
Contacted this week, Revolution Rail Co. principal Robert Harte said he preferred to wait several days before detailing his company’s plans, but that his operation would likely be underway by mid-July.

The Albany, NY Times-Union newpaper published an article about the new rail bikes:

Revolution Rail Co. is offering excursions on a stretch of track several miles north of the North Creek rail station, on a line that linked to Tahawus, where iron ore and later titanium dioxide were mined. The vehicles are similar to paddle boats on rail wheels, with passengers sitting upright as they pedal themselves north about three miles, then turn around and pedal back south.
En route, they cross a trestle bridge spanning the Hudson River.

NORTH CREEK — The tourist railroad traversing the scenic southeast Adirondacks has taken its last run.

Iowa Pacific Holdings has begun removing equipment from North Creek and expects to be gone within a month, a local official said. And on Tuesday it removed the last of the controversial tanker cars it had stockpiled on a siding near Tahawus, an environmental activist said.

The Saratoga & North Creek Railway’s website offered no clue about its status Wednesday. The cellphone belonging to the railroad’s general manager was continuously busy. The railroad’s toll-free number rang through to an off-site operator who said only that it was no longer operating passenger trains.

Iowa Pacific began operating its excursion train in 2011 after another company, Upper Hudson Scenic Railroad Co., lost its contract to operate on tracks owned by Warren County...

At least one Warren County supervisor is advocating for the county to take another look at potentially using the county-owned rail line for a bike trail after the operator of a tourist train on the line cancelled its winter trains for the second year in a row.

Lake Luzerne Supervisor Gene Merlino, chairman of the county board’s Tourism Committee, said Friday at a Board of Supervisors meeting that he was “really disappointed” at Saratoga & North Creek Railway’s last-minute cancellation of its winter trains.

“If they’re not going to do the snow train, we need to know before January,” he said. “We have to know what’s going on.”

Merlino pointed out that the railroad’s plans to run winter trains resulted in the train track right-of-way being off limits for snowmobile trails that had used them for years during the winter. The railroad operator that pre-dated SNCRR did not run winter trains, so the track area had become part of the snowmobile trail system, and it was frustrating that no trails were running but snowmobilers could no longer use the right-of-way.

Two bicycling groups proposed in 2015 that the 88-mile stretch of rails between Saratoga County and Tahawus be turned into a bike trail. Many bike trails around the country were abandoned rail lines.

Warren County instead renewed its contract with SNCRR parent company Iowa Pacific Holdings for five years, running until 2021...



So much for the Renewal of WARREN COUNTY signing the Contract with SNC RR until 2021, I place the blame on all Involved!!

An August 16, 2018 article in the Adirondack Daily Enterprise:

Warren County is looking to see if anyone wants to lease or purchase the county-owned rail line.

As the company that formerly ran tourist and freight trains on the line continues to miss deadlines to remove its equipment from the line, the county Board of Supervisors plans to put out a “request for proposals” for use of the rails between North Creek and Hadley.

Horicon Supervisor Matt Simpson, chairman of the county Board of Supervisors Public Works Committee, said county leaders have heard from representatives of at least three potential operators who have expressed interest in use of the line. That includes the operators of Stony Creek Ranch, who want to use a southern portion of the rail to and from their business.

While the companies have reached out to some supervisors and “there has been a lot of talk,” Simpson said the county board has “nothing in writing” from anyone about what they want to do on the rails. A request for proposals will require them to formally outline what they would like to do, and allow county leaders to evaluate the plans.

I have heard a few reasons why the rock business never took off but these are the two chief reasons:
1. CP would not quote a reasonable rate to get the stone down to Long Island (highly generalized, lol)
2. The aggregate is laden with uranium which makes it heavier than normal granite or traprock, allegedly about 30% heavier. That means that on an equivalent Cubic Yard volumetric basis, you will PAY to haul 30% MORE by weight than for the equivalent volume of granite or traprock.
3. The presence of a heavy metal in the aggregate makes it much less attractive where electrical conductivity is an issue, such as when used as railroad ballast and the need to electrically isolate opposite rails on the same track.
