That sounds right. I believe it's 2 ATSF cars and one ACL or SAL car in either San Marcos of New Braunfels also a CNW box and T&P AC&F steel caboose at a restaurant/bar/club. I've got pictures at home - I'll look when I get home from work.

Trucks on Colton County (The ACL Car) have NdeM stenciling on them.
My ACL is in quotes above for a couple reasons - the letter board's not long enough for "ATLANTIC COAST LINE" and it looks a near duplicate to the ATSF car.

I wonder if the Dr. Henry mentioned above was Dr. Henry Renfert, Dr. Renfert owned numerous cars, NKP 151 City of Chicago and NYC 658 Rippling Stream (both now at Austin Steam Train), Pullman 8-5 Clover Glade, now at Temple RR & Heritage Museum, an ex Southern heavyweight diner (in Taylor, TX now I think) and I have photo evidence of an ex Amtrak diner 6017, ATSF Regal Stream, and NP 484, a travelers rest car, later sold to Mexico.
jmlaboda wrote:

Trucks likely salvaged from NdeM car that was scrapped, maybe the same source as the letterboard? Definitely shorter than what ACL would have used but not really that much shorter... maybe 6 feet?

The coach is ex-AMTK 4540, nee-ATSF 2937. NCRY is the reporting mark of North Central Rwy.

First off, thanks Bradley, for posting the photos!

Second, yes it was indeed Dr. Henry Renfert who owned the Regal Stream.

Third, a note on the list of cars that Renfert owned: the ex-Amtrak diner listed as #6017. If the number is correct, then this car is not actually a diner, but a 60 seat chair (coach) that was originally SAL #6219 with 52 seats (built by Budd in 1947 in Lot #9613-009), to SCL #5204, went to Amtrak in 1971 with the same #, seating increased to 60 in 1974 as #6017, later (when??) retired and stored until sold in 1985 to an unknown party, and now owned by Morristown & Erie/Railroad Power Leasing as RRPX #6219 and stored with several former NYC chairs in Cedar Knolls, NJ. If the fact that it is a diner is correct, then the car number is most likely #8017, not #6017. If #8017, then it is a 48 seat diner that was originally SAL #6112 built by Budd in 1947 in Lot #9624-009, to SCL #5917, went to Amtrak in 1971 as #8017, later (when??) retired and stored until sold in 1984 to an unknown party, and now located at the Gold Coast Railroad Museum in Miami.

Fourth, a note on the sleeper Colleton County: it was built by P-S in 1949 in Lot #6809 to Plan #4140B, went to Amtrak in 1971, was retired in 1976 and sold to the North Alabama Chapter NRHS/North Alabama RR Museum in Huntsville. My question is, was this car also owned by Dr. Henry Renfert at one time?

Fifth, regarding the chair located in San Marcos as NCRY #2937 and identified by Jerry as being ex-Amtrak #4540, nee-AT&SF #2937. There is a conflict with this being the case, as the #2937/#4540 was previously identified as one of the cars that was acquired by the New Georgia Railroad. Specifically, the #2937 was built by P-S in 1950 in Lot #W6842 to Plan #7503A as a 44 seat leg rest chair for the El Capitan, went to Amtrak in 1971 as #4540, was retired in October 1981 and was sold in 1983 to Excursion Lines. It was later (when??) resold to the New Georgia RR, I believe as NGRX #2937, and was sold in 1993 to the Great Miami RR as FLSX #2937. Great Miami RR also acquired a second former Santa Fe Budd-built chair from New Georgia, the NGRX #1502, as FLSX #1502, which I have not been able to identify. Both cars were later (when??) moved to storage on the Southwest Pennsylvania RR at Scottdale, PA, and the #2937 was set ablaze by vandals on 9/4/2011. The #1502 was not damaged. So, one of these 2 cars is obviously not the nee-AT&SF #2937.

But NGRX 1502 is not a Budd-built car...

A second PS leg-rest coach was also rostered by the NGRX, carrying the number 1505 while on the New Georgia...

No clue as to the history of these cars other than that they did serve Amtrak and Santa Fe.

I misread the number on Renfert's AMTK diner, it would be 8017. The picture is kind fuzzy and the number is whitelined, but it's definitely of the galley side of a diner. Sorry about the confusion. I do not know if he owned Colleton County. I will make some inquiries to some friends that were acquainted with him. Also would like to apologize for the thread drift on this subject.

As to the coach, That's interesting. I don't see an AMTK number plate on this side, and I don't have any photos of the other side. I think this place was/is a restaurant/bar, but the cars had NOT had their sides cut into in 2009 when I took these photos.

Next time I'm in San Marcos with some time I'll stop back by and look.

Thanks for your passenger car photos. Looks like rather than just a CNW box car, there might be at least three box cars there. Did you perhaps get photos of them too?

Les

Les, I only have photos of 2, one was behind a building. the other I have photos of is ex MP.

I was going on 8 year old memory when I said one - apparently that was faulty!

Ted,
Hello from another Ted!

We had the AT &SF Baggage CAR #1776 at the Western Railway Museum from the early 1980s until about 2002 when it was sold to the TT Agricultural Museum at Stevenson, California for static display.

Sorry but that is the only number I have for it. Do not know if it is a Santa Fe or Amtrak Number.

Other Ted,

That would be a heavyweight baggage-express car. Thanks for the info!

Hoping someone can assist:

Looking for ownership & build information on the (as I've been told) Budd baggage currently at Delaware & Ulster RR; Arkville, NY.

As I've been told it's ex-SF. D&U has had it for quite some time (since mid to late 80's.), installed a generator set in it ca. 2005 for use with the then acquired ex-Acadian streamline equipment. I believe it to be lightweight baggage express.

The car can be seen in this link (not my image) https://get.google.com/albumarchive/114 ... D8fli2c8Zr

Any info would be sincerely appreciated..

Should be noted that the Vista Valley is in service, being used by the Cape May Seashore Lines for their Santa train.

This is the #4462, as posted last month in the "Surviving Passenger Cars in the United States" group on Facebook by the car's current owner.

RainierRails,

I went back through this entire thread to see if I had given you this information prior, but didn't see anything. The Mt. Rainier Railroad & Logging Museum has the following car in service:

TMBL #40040
Ordered by Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway from Budd (Lot #9627-013) in June, 1945. Delivered between Jan. and March, 1948. Built as 14-seat lunch counter + 20 seat diner (later increased to 24). Assigned to Amtrak train “Adirondack” in 1996 and named L’Auberge Laurentian.
ATSF #1557, to Amtrak #8102 (diner), to Amtrak #3111 (lounge). To TMBL #40040 in 2003. Leased to MRSR, Nov. 2014.

"TMBL" is Tacoma Municipal Belt Line (aka Tacoma Rail).

Thanks, Brian, for the info! Is/was Mt. Rainier also leasing Tacoma Rail's 3 ex-PRR coaches as well? (Thinking about it now, I seem to recall that was the case, just want to reconfirm.)
