While at times I am not much of a fan of folks dredging up old threads and posting a reply well after the original replies have been posted I am very grateful that on RYPN it isn't a problem, the rather, it is greatly of value, as in this thread. A comment to add to what has been discussed...

Tavern Lounge SP #2985 "Golden Outlook"... I don't know how those 2 cars ended up on that list, but Sierra Western never owned either of them.

I believe that this number should be 2385, which became SW 507 SHASTA.

An Update:

Updating another old thread.

Last year over on Railroad Picture Archives I found a photo taken by Michael Palmieri at NOUPT of Amtak's Crescent and the World's Fair Daylight: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1931904. The photographer lists the consist of the Daylight in the caption:

Michael Palmieri wrote:
Across the platform on track 6 is the WORLD'S FAIR DAYLIGHT, which would depart for Oregon the next morning. The DAYLIGHT had GS-4 4-8-4 4449, water car PNWC 4219, combine PNWC 3300 MILN D. GILESPIE, sleeper-lounge PNWC 600 MT. HOOD, coaches SW 542 SONOMA, SW 544 MENDOCINO, SW 546 HUMBOLDT, SW 507 SHASTA, SW 511 STANISLAUS, PAR 2397, SW 500 SAN JOAQUIN, SW 518 TUOLUMNE, and GW 598 RED RIVER, diner SW 156 LAKE PEPIN and observation-lounge GS 1290 APPEKUNNY MOUNTAIN. (GW was Great Western Tours, GS was Grant Supply, PAR was Pacific Railroad Society, PNWC was Pacific Northwest Chapter-NRHS, and SW was Sierra Western.)

The DAYLIGHT had arrived in New Orleans the previous Saturday, and SP 4449 had spent the week parked outside the Fair site. UP 4-8-4 8444 was on display inside the Fair, so for a week there were two big Northern's at the Fair.

Roster of the World's Fair Daylight:

Coach GW #568 "Red River" was built for the GN Red River in 1950 by AC&F in Lot #3125 as 21 seat diner 20 seat lounge observation #1147 "Red River". Rebuilt to 68 seat coach #1147 in 1962. To BN #6800 (number was applied). To Amtrak #6800. Retired 11/1977. To private ownership (in 1978?). To Great Western Tours as GW #568. To the Pacific Northwest Chapter as PNWC #6800. Currently in Daylight paint.

First, some corrections on the info I had posted way back when on the #1147/#6800:

The #1147 was built with a 9 seat lunch counter, 12 dining seats, and 20 parlor seats. The number of parlor seats was reduced in 1953 to 16, and the car was rebuilt to a 68 seat coach in 1963, not 1962. The #6800 was not repainted from Cascade Green to Phase I until circa 1974, and was sold in 1978 to the Southern California Passenger Corporation in Santa Barbara. Great Western Tours acquired the car in 1980 as #568. (On RR Picture Archives and elsewhere, the reporting mark listed is GWT, however, the actual reporting mark was GRT.) The Pacific Northwest Chapter acquired the car in April 1986 as PNWC #6800.

Now, for the update:

As posted by Marty Bernard on Trainorders, the #6800 has been restenciled from PNWC reporting marks to AARX, and is now in use on the Albany & Eastern Railway's Santiam Excursion Train based in Lebanon, OR, along with 3 other passenger cars.

Trainorders thread started on 3/22/15 by Marty: http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?1,3696842

Picture of the #6800 as posted both on Trainorders and RR Picture Archives: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=4143477

"The #6800 was not repainted from Cascade Green to Phase I until circa 1974, and was sold in 1978 to the Southern California Passenger Corporation in Santa Barbara."

SCPC was Bill Gawzner, then owner of the Miramar Hotel in Santa Barbara, CA, who had the ex-UP National Embassy and the former Amtrak 8117 lunch counter diner dorm in stationary use on his hotel property. The Embassy was just on display, but the 8117 was used as a functioning lunch counter diner and kept in almost as-received-from-Amtrak condition for this use. The 8117 was acquired directly from Amtrak. The Embassy was acquired from Pacific Railroad Society in trade for former Amtrak Shasta coaches 7506 and 7512 circa 1978. PRS parted out the 7506 and sold it to Purdy Co in Mojave for scrap circa 1980 but still has the 7512.

The third car appears to be the #507 (Shasta), though it could have been the #511 (Stanislaus) as well. Anyone know for sure?

I vaguely remember hearing a story once explaining why they were painted NP before getting the Daylight colors, but I don't remember specifics at this late date.

I am puzzled. It's not one of the cars that's been discussed in this thread, and I really can't identify it without more info. As for the other cars: the baggage in Cascade Green I'm thinking is a CB&Q Havelock car, the P-S fluted side car is more than likely of AT&SF origin, and the baggage in Amtrak Phase III appears to be one of the ex-VIA, nee-CN cars. Does anyone have more info on these cars? Thanks in advance!

The Daylight painted car is PV Amber Trail, ex-UP 5430, before repainting to two-tone grey. The fluted car is former SOU/Amtrak Altamaha River. The BN baggage car is a former NP car but I can't remember off hand if it is a PS or SLC car and what year it was built but it is from the former BN Executive fleet. The Amtrak baggage car is former VIA/CN car Amtrak 1006. It was scrapped since the photo was taken. The other cars aren't in danger of being scrapped.

A while back, I acquired an original Kodachrome slide of the nee-AT&SF full dome lounge #523 Donner Pass, which shows that it was also painted in the faux-NP Loewy Two Tone Green scheme, and that it was lettered for Sierra Western, not for Great Western Tours. Specifically, the slide was taken by Edward Egan in Klamath Falls, OR, on September 3rd, 1983:

http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=4469061

Back in December 2015 over on Trainorders, Marty Bernard had posted a thread in which he posted a slide he took in August 1991 of a Oregon, California & Eastern boxcar: http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?11,3903187. There were responses from several TO members with additional slides/photos of various OC&E subjects. The last of these was of 4 of these nee-SP Shasta Daylight chairs, along with what appears to be 68 seat coach #568 Red River, diner #156 Lake Pepin, and the nee-AT&SF full dome. These 7 cars are part of a consist for a passenger special on the OC&E, and all are in the faux-NP scheme. The photo/slide was posted by TO member "nomosantafe", and he thinks that it was taken sometime in 1983. Besides the 7 cars in the faux-NP scheme is another car in Daylight paint (perhaps nee-GN Ranch Car #151 Hidden Lake) and an unknown lightweight business car, perhaps the #100 Happy Hollow.

Over on Flickr, Marty posted a series of slides taken by his late friend Roger Puta showing at least 3 of these nee-SP chairs in use on the Nevada Northern RY in May 1982: https://www.flickr.com/photos/129679309@N05/sets/72157679241916005. The album also includes slides of the Lake Pepin and Donner Pass at Oakland, CA, along with a lightweight business car numbered as #100, which could very well be the Happy Hollow.

So, all told, it seems that Sierra Western's cars were used on at least 2 different lines besides the NWP during the time which they were painted in the faux-NP scheme.

I realized that in my above post regarding where the Sierra Western cars were used besides the NWP while in the faux-NP scheme, that I should have said three lines, not two: the Oregon, California & Eastern, the Nevada Northern, and as Jeff had mentioned earlier in this thread, the McCloud River.

Whatever happened to the baggage chair combine 3300 that was the tool car at one point that was owned by PNWC-NRHS, is it still around? The car that replaced it, the UP RPO was reportedly sold.

From an earlier post in this thread from 2002...

"Crew Car PNWC #3300 "Miln D. Gillespie" was originally built for the SP Daylight in 1937 by P-S in Lot #6500 to Plan #7375 as 44 seat baggage coach #3300. To the Pacific Northwest Chapter as PNWC #3300 "Miln D. Gillespie". It was heavily damaged while being switched by the SP in Portland in 1990. Has been out-of-service since."

(Posted by member Rainier Rails)

A poster on Trainorders from 2011 said it was last seen on a siding somewhere near Portland.

good news and Sad news, a while back, some of their cars were sold for scrap.
the round end car is still in use in Portland, the second to last car is in a scrapyard in Tillamook, the articulated coach pair is now used in MRL service, the ex-up car is used as a private coach named Amber Trail, the ex gn coach is still used in portland named Red River, the rest of the consist i am unsure what has happened.

i hope this helps.
