Does anyone have any contacts at or near the Museum of Alaska Transportation & Industry at Wasilla? I am trying to get the builder's numbers for their two Alaska RR wreckers. All the information should be on US Army Transportation Corps plates riveted to the car bodies. After several attempts to contact the museum directly I have given up on them.

Have you looked at Alaskarails.org, they have a pretty good listing on all the equipment that operated in AK.

The Museum closes from about Labor Day to Memorial Day due to the majority of their displays are outside in Alaska winter weather. You will be lucky to get someone by phone.

I have those numbers somewhere in my notes...Their numbers are:
7505 USA Brownhoist crane
7508 USA Brownhoist crane
But I don't have the other details handy but will try and dig through the materials in my file cabinets from some of my visits there...

Thank you Art and others. I drew up the ARR crane list that is on the web site. 7505 and 7508 were the US Army numbers for the cranes. Information from the Industrial Brownhoist records has throwen doudt on the stated builder's numbers so I asked for a check of the plates. With any luck this will settle the matter.

Here is what the Industrial Brownhoist records show:

NOTE DUPLICATE NUMBER (T&NO matches factory records)
11482 75t SW 1943
US Army #7508 (retired at Belle Mead, NJ)
Alaska RR #LC-57 09-47 Retired 1980
Museum of Alaska Transportation & Industry Wasilla, AK 1984
11482 24t DC 10-42
Texas & New Orleans MW #5870
Southern Pacific #5870

Note duplicate number
11489 75t SW 1942
(most likely ex-US Army)
Tennessee Products & Chemical Rockwood, TN (here 1959)
11489 75t SW 1943
US Army #7505 (retired at Belle Mead, NJ)
Alaska RR #LC-56 09-47 Retired 1980
Museum of Alaska Transportation & Industry Wasilla, AK 1984

There were some cases where the same number was actsidentily given to two different cranes.

Sorry, I can't answer the question and MATI is about 50 miles from my house.

I can offer a couple of photos from the day they arrived at the Wasilla site in the early 1990s. Taken looking railroad south with the ARR main to the left. The ARR main line was closed for 6-8 hours to realign the rails to move about 25 items of rolling stock and locomotives onto the new site.

I thought I might ad that as far as I known there are only four WWII US Army wreckers left. The two in Alaska and two in Australia. I have seen a good photo of the builder's plate of one of the Australian wreckers and it does not have the builder's number stamped in the space provided for it. There are five more US Army steam wreckers around that were built in the early 1950s.
