Apparently that one boxcar left on the site is the one shown in the third photo down from the top of this page. I am not familiar with it, but I hope they saved the Iowa Central boxcar that I mentioned above.

Minneapolis & St. Louis 2-8-0 # 471 was apparently purchased by a construction company and moved to Janesville, Minnesota. Supposedly a cosmetic restoration was in the plans. Wonder if anything has been done with the Consolidation in these intervening years?

I doubt that anything was done to #471 other than some cleaning and primer painting. There are a lot of missing parts. When the engine was owned by Klein Brick Yard, it was used for stationary steam power. I never heard any explanation of the details or purpose for the steam. I did hear that at one point, it was used or stored at the New Brighton Klein brick yard for a time. But it was moved to Chaska apparently in the early 1950s. The Klein brick yard at Chaska was a large and interesting operation with some 0-4-0T steam locomotives of 2-foot-gage and 2-3 Plymouth 2-footers as well. They also had an earlier rail operation that was 3-foot-gage with four-wheel dump cars. I don't know what that operation used for motive power. For as extensive as the Klein Brick Yard was, there seems to be little historical information available about it.

The box car on the hill is an old Soo Line outside braced Fowler style car. The roof was failing between the door openings and the floor was just about gone.

Oh, I see. Did you get the Iowa Central boxcar out of there? If so, what are the plans for it?

Thanks so much for that information. Is that from the locomotive builder's records? I recall exploring their old ruins of the brick plant overgrown in the woods a long time ago. At that point, the 2-foot-gage system was quite evident. But there were also larger gage 4-wheel side dump cars sitting in the woods. They definitely seemed like they were from an earlier era of operation.

When I was there, they had their modern plant, but a lot of older plant ruins were scattered around the site as well as several other sites in Chaska. A lot of these ruins had complex underground tunnels for smoke and draft passage. There were also some beehive kilns.

Mid-Continent RR museum harvested a pair of passenger trucks and a tender tank last summer and there was very little salvageable equipment left on the site then. We walked the entire site that day and found nothing of value in the woods or the weeds. As far as I know, the site was finally closed in the fall of 2016 and anything left was scrapped.
