Happy Birthday, Ross. I had the pleasure of riding behind the 614 several times on the Chessie System specials.

Ross-because of your 1970 trip from Harrisburg to Horseshoe Curve and back, I got hooked on mainline steam excursions. I rode behind 2101 and 614 as well as several of the Southern Railroad excursion engines. Too bad, the choices today are so few and far between. Thanks for the great memories

Thanks Bob Lyndall for posting the b'day photo and to all the others for their good wishes.

Spent the day today traveling from home to St.Louis on numbers 49 & 21. Both good trips so great way to spend a birthday for a train nut!!

Onward & upward. Ross Rowland

Big steam excursions have provided fond memories and good times, and I would bet they inspire a few die hard railfans and rail historians out of young observers. As a kid, I happened to see the Chessie Steam Special turning on a wye in Michigan, sometime in the late 1970s.

Recently a nice photo essay was posted about Clifton Forge, perhaps an accidental birthday tribute?

Hope your birthday dreams come true, Mr. Rowland!

A very happy belated birthday to you, Ross, and many, many best wishes for a wonderful year ahead! I, too, very much hope that all your railroad dreams come true. We will all benefit when they do.

And thanks, again, from this enthusiastic railfan for igniting the flame of my loving trains, especially big main line steam locomotives, with the SP 4449 pulling the American Freedom Train. When I saw her rolling through my city, it was love at first sight! I was hopelessly and permanently deeply enthralled by that incredible and beautiful and majestic locomotive, and then by many others. That deep love of the SP 4449 led to many, many other good things, and I am deeply in your debt for all the fun and great memories I have had from riding and chasing and learning about trains and railroading, and for sparking my decision long ago to become part of the restoration crew of the SP 2472. (The SP 4449 was too far away.)

So the very best of wishes to you as you celebrate another birthday!
