From a Facebook post by noted L&N/Clinchfield/etc. historian Ron Flanary:

Quote:
If you didn't see or photograph the TTI in operation between Paris and Maysville, KY, on the old L&N P&M Branch, it's probably too late. The TTI has suffered a major washout and will not be repaired. A very reliable source reports that CSX has already sold the boat they used on the Ohio River to move coal, and all the TTI units are for immediate sale. Most likely the entire line will be pulled up within a year. The former L&N roundhouse and turntable at Paris will also be razed before long.

This is a six-stall roundhouse, recently renovated to boot.

Consider the source--someone who has been around the scene longer than most of us, and who has nothing to gain by spreading any falsehoods.

Wow, that's sad. Roundhouses are few and far between and a recently renovated one is really rare.

I was hoping we would see the mainline being sold or given to a railroad museum and used for tourism. It's a gorgeous line and the entire region could benefit from it.

Any U-Boats left? Or did the Dash 7's long ago make them extinct at TTI?

I read somewhere - unconfirmed, of course - that the yard had largely been cleared. Most 'obsolete' power had long been stored rather than scrapped, but with things winding down it's anybody's guess.

I believe that they'd be the last chance at saving a U36B if one is extant still (And probably a U28B, too).

Too bad that time likely isn't on anyone's side if anything is even left. I'm not sure if there would be a museum ready to take on a project like this, but the lack of time all but certainly seals the deal that it couldn't happen.

The first two generations of GE diesel road power isn't very well represented, with the Dash 8 generation likely set to follow in the next few years (Two B-B's are safe and secure, but it's the C40-8 and the C40-8W that really led GE to supremacy in the late 80's and early 90's).

I suppose that makes what does get saved even more special, but as a railfan, it will always be sad to see an entire class of locomotive become extinct.
