It seems as though most of the updates released this year regarding 3713 have focused on fundraising efforts, rather than mechanical progress, the recent headlight bracket update notwithstanding. My question is, has much mechanical progress been made this year, or has further work been hampered by a lack of available funds? The last major work update I can remember seeing was the successful application of a boiler patch. I am not trying to stir things up, but merely curious about the current status of this beautiful locomotive.

An update is being prepared for Railfest (Labor Day). It will detail current work on appliances (air compressors, booster, feedwater pump, etc...) along with other news. It will be part of our next newsletter and will also be posted online on our website and Facebook.

The headlight restoration may seem small, but it bodes quite well for the future of the project. The gents working on it are volunteers from Johnson College, a tech school in Scranton. We've had increased interest in volunteer work on the locomotive. If you have talents to lend, please contact us at project3713@project3713.com and your email will be routed to the Steamtown proejct lead.

We had a great spring, with our beer fest and excursion on The Stourbridge Line, but then came the sad news that our honorary chariman Bill Withuhn passed away. Bill was a strong supporter and offered a guiding hand.

Looking forward, we have a couple of things cooking that are not ready to be revealed, however, there are some fundraising tidbits that will be formally announced soon.

There will be a night photo session at Steamtown on Saturday Sept 2 as part of Railfest. Proceeds will benefit Project3713. Look for online ticket ordering to go live next week on http://www.project3713.com

Our "Signers' Fund" subscription donation program is almost live. Much like a PBS member drive, it will include a variety of different thank you gifts in accordance with the level of donation.

Our beautiful new T-shirts (two different designs) will be ready for online ordering, soon.

As everyone who attended our Spring Mixer learned, the restoration is moving forward as planned under the current partnership agreement with the National Park Service. Project3713 is tasked with raising a total of $750k with the expectation that the National Park Service budget will cover the remaining costs of restoration.

For anyone who couldn't attend the mixer, Railfest will be the next good opportunity to meet the team and ask questions in person. Of course, you'll be able to see the locomotive, as well.

The best place to find ongoing updates is our Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/project3713. The mechanical and fundraising folks are all active there. Our formal updates generally come in September, December and April.

As usual, donations of money and talent are welcome as we continue to move the project forward.

Last I heard, they were collecting/rebuilding parts so that when the shop crew is available, work is available. No sense paying for labor if the park service will provide it for free, but receipts from ABC Boiler Co. don't make for interesting web updates.

Don't mistake silence for poor stewardship.

For what it is worth, relative to both the 3713 and Steamtown in general, a formal NPS procurement covering the cab for the 3713 has been announced via the FBO.

Work to done is summarized as follows:

This portion of the Boston and Maine locomotive #3713 restoration shall provide the construction of one (1) new locomotive cab. The project shall follow copies of historic drawings and documents used in the original construction of the locomotive as well as satisfying current Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) safety regulations and American Welding Society (AWS) standards where applicable. The following statement of work (SOW) is to address the construction of a new locomotive cab for the Boston and Maine #3713.

Some details:

The lead truck wheelsets are a key component that will be necessary in the full restoration of the locomotive. The project shall follow copies of historic drawings and documents used in the original construction of the locomotive while satisfying current Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) safety and operational regulations, and, standards set forth by the American Association of Railroads (AAR). The following statement of work (SOW) addresses the manufacturing and assembly of new lead truck wheelsets.

It's neat to see how most of the contract work for 3713 is being contracted out via Boston. I know there were a lot of New England groups eager to see 3713 run again; great to see that they are taking part in this.

Is the cost for these RFPs going to be covered by the 3713 group, the NPS, or a combination of both? Not trying to make a point, just curious about the process.

The items listed are being funded by the NPS. The restoration team has parsed out a breakdown of components and where funding for each will be drawn from (NPS or Project3713). There will be many more details about the work in our next newsletter, which should hit the Interwebs later this week.

It is a very exciting time to be involved with this effort. As always, support from the preservation community is welcome at www.project3713.com (the new t-shirts are way cool, hint.. hint...)
